We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult superhero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

The warmth and wit of celebrated playwright turned cinema auteur Marcel Pagnol shine in this enchanting slice-of-life comedy. Returning to the Provençal countryside he knew intimately, Pagnol draws a vivid portrait of a close-knit village where the marital woes of a sweetly deluded baker (the inimitable Raimu, praised by no less than Orson Welles as “the greatest actor who ever lived”) snowball into a scandal that engulfs the town. Marrying the director’s abiding concern for the experiences of ordinary people with an understated but superbly judged visual style, The Baker’s Wife is at once wonderfully droll and piercingly perceptive in its depiction of the complexities of human relationships.

With her Oscar-winning turn in Klute, Jane Fonda reinvented herself as a new kind of movie star. Bringing nervy audacity and counterculture style to the role of Bree Daniels—a call girl and aspiring actor who becomes the focal point of a missing-person investigation when detective John Klute (Donald Sutherland) turns up at her door—Fonda made the film her own, putting an independent woman and escort on-screen with a frankness that had not yet been attempted in Hollywood. Suffused with paranoia by the conspiracy-thriller specialist Alan J. Pakula, and lensed by master cinematographer Gordon Willis, Klute is a character study thick with dread, capturing the mood of early-1970s New York and the predicament of a woman trying to find her own way on the fringes of society.

The lackluster summer continues this weekend with no films posing even a mild threat to “Spider-Man: Far From Home” which fell a mere -51.0%, hanging on to the crown with $45.3 million. “Toy Story 4” stuck around in second place with another $20.9 million in its fourth weekend. The newcomers finally showed up at #3 with “Crawl” earning $12 million. Seeing as it was projected to make $15 million, that $3 million difference hurts a little bit. But not nearly as bad as “Stuber” landing #4 with $8.2 million when it was projected to make $17 million. That almost $9 million difference shows that its not just sequels that are hurting this year. “Yesterday” rounded out the Top Five withh $6.7 million. Other newcomers included the Indian film “Super 30,” debuting at #14 with over $870,000 while “Menteur” opened at #15 with over $600,000. “The Farewell,” starring Awkwafina, earned over $350,000, grabbing an average of $88,916 in four theaters, which was enough to earn it the POPCORN AWARD. Rounding out the List was the debut of the documentary “Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable,” chronicling the life of the Soul Surfer herself.
“Wild Rose” took the GOLDEN PERCENTAGE AWARD for the second week, with an increase of +41.4%. That wasn’t hard to take as every other film, barring one, decreased in percentage and spot on the List. “Unplanned” was the film that broke expectations. Not only had it fallen completely off the List but it was also closed. It had just opened in some Canadian markets and so it must have hit some U.S. theaters as well, landing back on the List at #20, earning it a ROCKET and the only increase over the entire weekend. The closest film to it was “The Last Black Man In San Francisco,” which held on to its spot at #18. Falling off the List, as expected was “Anna,” which BOMB’d last weekend, only to fall off the weekend. Also expected was “The Other Side of Heaven 2: Fire of Faith,” which was only in its third weekend of release. Also following those films were bigger titles like “Dark Phoenix,” “Echo in the Canyon,” “Booksmart,” “The Dead Don’t Die,” and “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu,” which all fell off. Half of those films still had budgets that were not available. “Booksmart” was the only one of them that had made money domestically, while “Pikachu,” “Anna,” and “Dark Phoenix” all lost money domestically.
The headline you can expect next weekend is “The Lion King takes its crown,” because it is projected to make a whopping $201 million, which would make it the second highest opening weekend of the year, behind “Avengers: Endgame.” Nothing else dare step against the Disney remake, so no other films were offered with projections for next weekend. Do not count out some newer titles to take spots on the List however. Making room for them could be the documentary “Pavarotti,” which fell eight spots this weekend, headed towards the bottom of the List. “Shaft” and “Late Night” both fell seven spots as well, so those two could be on their way out. But all eyes will be on “The Lion King” and how high it can actually go.
