JULY 24TH, 2012

Back to a week of very few DVD releases, with “Silent House”, a remake of a foreign film, about a young woman (Elizabeth Olsen), who becomes trapped in her families lake house, while inside things get out of control. The selling point of the film, however, is that the entire film is displayed as one consecutive camera shot, with no cuts throughout its duration, much like Alfred Hitchcock’s classic, “Rope”. With a disparaging 42% on Rotten Tomatoes, I am still holding higher hopes for Elizabeth Olsen in this thriller.

“The Deep Blue Sea” appears somewhat interesting, starring Tom Hiddleston (“The Avengers”) alongside the beautiful Rachel Weisz, who plays a married woman caught in a love affair with a pilot. Also, “Footnote”, which was one of the five films nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film gets a release this week. Though trumped by the mega-favorite “A Separation”, the Israeli dark comedy, “Footnote”, focuses on a father and son who are rival professors vying for the same award.

The television releases are fairly dead this week as well, besides “Boss Season One”, with Kelsey Grammer playing the mayor of Chicago in this political drama. The selling point for this series is a very sexually active mayor’s aide, played by the exquisitely attractive Kathleen Robertson.

Small releases have a few familiar faces. “Meeting Evil” stars Samuel L. Jackson and Luke Wilson, in a deal-with-the-devil plot that almost makes this low budget Indie worth viewing. Also, “Girl From The Naked Eye” appears somewhat intriguing, starring Sasha Grey among other actresses, which was just in limited release in theaters a few weeks ago.

With the lack of major releases this week, your time is better off spent going to see “The Watch” or seeing “The Dark Knight Rises” again, in theaters, although I will probably find some time to fit in a few of these films.
