The year is 1938, and Friederich is Jewish. The next day, his blonde girlfriend fails to show up for their usual walk to school; and the teacher locks bewildered Fred in a small, dark closet for the entire day. Pulled from school by his parents, Fred then watches as the Nazis seize his father’s transportation business, and paint swastikas on the fleet of bright orange, familiar “Biermann” trucks. A family friend becomes a Nazi official and paints a swastika on the Biermanns’ door to protect them. The Biermanns’ apartment becomes a safehouse. The Biermanns soon decide to flee with just he clothes on their backs. After being rejected by Switzerland, they cross the French border on foot under the cover of night. After living in a squalid hotel for carnival workers in Paris, Fred’s mother negotiates with a ship captain in Marseilles for transport to Palestine. The Biermanns sail in the bowels of the ship with the horses of French Foreign Legionnaires, who let Fred ride the horses, to his delight. The Biermanns emerge from the European ship into the Middle Eastern World of Palestine. Eight year old Fred’s life is about to change forever.
