The Blade (#1305)

Criterion | 1995 | 105 min | Not Rated
Directed by Tsui Hark

Among the boldest accomplishments of Hong Kong cinema’s golden age, this uniquely visceral martial-arts movie puts a gritty new spin on the story of the one-armed swordsman, an iconic figure from the moment he was introduced by the Shaw Brothers studio in 1967. Composed in a whirlwind of immersive close-ups and fractured editing, The Blade follows the young sword-maker Ding On (Vincent Zhao), who, after losing an arm in an ambush, transforms himself into a furious avenger. With its intentionally disorienting stylization and starkly brutal tone, The Blade was a rare commercial disappointment for Tsui Hark, but it has since been reclaimed as one of the director’s most radical visions—a tour de force of action expressionism, and a scathing reappraisal of the wuxia genre’s code of masculinity, that achieves a feverish intensity.

Making one of the most triumphant returns in cinematic history, the great Peter Sellers is back in action —and back causing chaos—as the intrepid bumbler Inspector Clouseau for director Blake Edwards in The Return of the Pink Panther, the third in this team’s classic movie comedy series. The fun begins with dazzling animated incarnations of the Pink Panther cartoon character and of Clouseau romping through an epic opening credits sequence, and the mystery commences when the storied Pink Panther jewel is thrillingly heisted in a nocturnal raid. Much to the chagrin of the highly agitated Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom), Clouseau is called upon to recover the diamond. Prime suspect Sir Charles Litton (Christopher Plummer) sets off on his own investigation, with Clouseau several steps/trips/falls behind. From Tobe Hooper, director of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Poltergeist, comes the mini-series that scarred a generation. Based on Stephen King’s all-time classic of small town terror, welcome to Salem’s Lot. Population two-thousand and thirteen, but falling fast!

Author Ben Mears (David Soul) returns to the town of Salem’s Lot after 25 years to write about the Marsten House, an old mansion with a bad reputation that has haunted the writer since childhood. There’s an antiques store about to open, run by the mysterious Richard Straker (James Mason) and his unseen partner Mr. Barlow (Reggie Nalder), and they’re living in the Marsten House. A series of deaths and disappearances leads Ben to believe that a vampire is feeding on the town. But how can he stop them, and will anyone believe him?

The Blue Light

Kino Lorber | 1932 | 85 min | Not Rated
Directed by Leni Riefenstahl

By the end of the silent era, Leni Riefenstahl had become an iconic German actress for her athletic performances in the mountain-climbing films of director Arnold Fanck. So it was only natural that, when making her directorial debut, she should return to the genre which had made her famous. In The Blue Light (Das blaue Licht), she plays Junta, an eccentric mountain girl whom the villagers believe to be a witch, since she and only she can reach the peak of the deadly Monte Cristallo, atop which is a cache of luminous gemstones. She befriends a painter (Mathias Wieman) and, beneath a full moon, leads him to the forbidden grotto, not realizing the tragic repercussions of having disturbed the ethereal crystals. Working with cinematographers Hans Schneeberger and Heinz von Jaworsky, Riefenstahl created a dazzling ode to the senses, a folk tale laced with magic and overshadowed by the formidable visual impact of the Dolomites.

Eiichi Kudo’s Samurai Revolution Trilogy

Arrow | 1963-1967 | 3 Movies | 343 min | Not Rated
Directed by Eiichi Kudo

Throughout Japanese cinema, the image of the noble samurai righting wrongs katana in hand remains a fixture of the jidaigeki genre, with the authoritarianism and corruption of the country’s medieval past often attenuated for the sake of spectacle and entertainment. But in the 1960s, director Eiichi Kudo’s Samurai Revolution trilogy shattered this idealised conception of the samurai, providing an authentic and scathing portrayal of Japan’s tyrannical past to question the social and political landscape of his day.

Beginning in 1963 with 13 Assassins (remade in 2010 by Takashi Miike), followed by The Great Killing in 1964 and 11 Samurai in 1967, the Samurai Revolution trilogy depicts the rot at the heart of the Tokugawa shogunate: despotic lords oppress their people and abuse their power with impunity, loyalty to the Shogun is valued above compassion and righteousness, and samurai have shed any trace of nobility in favor of their own self-interest, which they pursue with gleeful cruelty. Each film portrays a group of honorable samurai driven to plan the political assassination of a corrupt lord, hoping to light the fuse that will eventually destroy the regime. But the rebels must understand the fatal consequences of their mission. Should the Shogun falter, then their lives and the entire samurai class will be forfeit.

Eiichi Kudo masterfully deploys expressive black and white cinematography, spectacular swordfights and compelling performances to paint a rich visual and narrative tapestry, using each film to further explore questions of ethics and morality. Featuring a who’s who of iconic jidaigeki actors including Chiezo Kataoka (Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji), Ko Nishimura (Lady Snowblood), Kei Sato (Hara-Kiri) and Toru Abe (Zatoichi and the One-Armed Swordsman), Kudo’s Samurai Revolution trilogy rank among the most important samurai films ever made and are a must-have for chanbara connoisseurs.

Honky Tonk

Warner Bros. | 1941 | 105 min | Not Rated
Directed by Jack Conway

Con artist Candy Johnson (Clark Gable) has been run out of town after town. Then he got wise. He went out and got a town of his own – Yellow Creek, Nevada. Lana Turner stars opposite Gable in this sometimes comic, always terrific Western. The title honky tonk is the Square Deal Saloon, where Candy and poker-playing sidekick Sniper (Chill Wills) cut cards but not the liquor. The colorful townsfolk include a Justice of the Peace (Frank Morgan), a long-suffering dancehall girl (Claire Trevor), and a law-unto-himself Sheriff (Albert Dekker). Topping it all, is the pizzazz of the first Gable-Turner pairing. After kissing her, Gable says: “Why don’t you jump in and get wet all over?” Upon initial release, Honky Tonk was MGM’s most financially successful release of the year. It was the first of four successful onscreen pairings between Gable and Turner and cemented Lana Turner’s status as one of the top leading ladies under contract to MGM. Newly remastered for the first time in over 35 years, the film arrives on Blu-ray looking sensational, restored from a 4K scan of the film’s original nitrate negative. HONKY TONK is an essential add to any classic cinema enthusiast’s collection!

It All Came True

Warner Bros. | 1940 | 97 min | Not Rated
Directed by Lewis Seiler

Killer Chips Maguire (Humphrey Bogart) is cooling his heels where the cops will never find him: a shabby boarding house run by two dear old ladies who cluck over Chips like devoted mother hens. When Chips finds out the biddies owe back taxes, he hits on a can’t-miss scheme. He talks his fellow boarders, zanies all, into turning the house into a Gay ’90s-themed nightclub! Fans who know the pre-stardom Bogart for his compelling performances as tightly coiled heavies in gangster sagas are in for a treat as Bogie unwinds with deadpan cracks in this appealing crime comedy. IT ALL CAME TRUE served as a terrific star turn for Ann Sheridan whose status as more than just the “Oomph” girl was strengthened by her turn as the sassy leading lady of the film. Critics not only praised Sheridan, but also took notice of Bogart’s multi-faceted performance which is one of the film’s delightful surprises. The witty story benefits from an outstanding supporting cast of character greats Zasu Pitts, Una O’Connor and Felix Bressart.

The Woman Cop (La Femme flic) (1980) Miou-Miou is magnificent as Corinne Levasseur, a gritty city policewoman who is transferred to a small mining town where she battles sexism and a trail of corruption that leads to the town’s most powerful family. Boisset based this intense depiction of “la femme flic” on actual events. Music by Philippe Sarde (Quest for fire). Rise Up, Spy (Espion, lève-toi) (1982) In a plum late-career role, Lino Ventura plays a sleeper agent in Switzerland who is activated after eight years of silence when the corpses start piling up. The Man Who Came To Dinner

Warner Bros. | 1942 | 112 min | Not Rated
Directed by William Keighley

Famed author Sheridan Whiteside possesses a tongue dipped in venom and a brain that can crack The New York Times crossword puzzle in four minutes. On a lecture tour in Ohio, he slips on the ice and is confined to the home of a bourgeois couple. He proceeds to plunge the household into chaos, ruling the place like a czar and meddling in everyone’s love life. Monty Woolley reprises his Broadway triumph as the imperious Whiteside in this delightful, lightning-paced farce. A who’s who of Hollywood talents portray a who’s who of thinly veiled real-life luminaries, ranging from Gertrude Lawrence to Harpo Marx. And Bette Davis shines in an uncharacteristic role as Whiteside’s unflappable secretary. The Man Who Came to Dinner. The original Broadway hit written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, was superbly brought to the big screen by Warner Bros. to delight audiences for decades to come. It’s a feast of wit and sophistication, now looking and sounding better than ever for its Blu-ray debut, derived from a 4K scan of the original nitrate camera negative.

The Prisoner Of Zenda

Kino Lorber | 1979 | 108 min | Not Rated
Directed by Richard Quine

A 19th-century classic gets the unpredictable Peter Sellers (The Party) treatment in this rollicking, all-star romp about a cabby who becomes a king. The crazy old monarch of Ruritania (Sellers) dies in a balloon accident, leaving the throne to his son Rudolf (also Sellers). But his evil brother Michael (Jeremy Kemp) wants the crown for himself. Afraid harm will come to Rudolf, his loyal followers (Lionel Jeffries and Simon Williams) switch his Majesty with a cab-driving London lookalike named Syd (Sellers yet again)! Add two adoring and confused royal blondes (Lynne Frederick and A Shot in the Dark’s Elke Sommer), plenty of treachery and double-dealing, and a full-scale battle for life and honor, and you’ve got Zenda at its zaniest! Director Richard Quine’s (Paris When It Sizzles, How to Murder Your Wife) lavish production features the beautiful scenery of Vienna and Salzburg set to a stately score by Henry Mancini (The Pink Panther).

The Sexploiters / Raw Love

(KINO CULT #46)

Kino Lorber | 1965 | 2 Movies | Not Rated
Directed by Ken Osborne

Kino Cult and Something Weird present two rarely-seen “roughies” culled from the lower depths of the American grindhouse. In The Sexploiters, Terri Steele is a Long Island housewife who immerses herself in the seedy subculture of the camera club, where clients engage live models for private photography sessions. Director Al Ruban later brought the gritty black-and-white aesthetics of of The Sexploiters to John Cassavetes’ 1968 Faces (which Ruban shot and edited), launching a decades-long collaboration between the two artists. Raw Love is a hicksploitation classic virtually unseen for 50 years: a sordid slice of life among the depraved moonshiners and uninhibited daughters of an unspecified rural community. Both films were mastered from original 35mm prints from the Sonney Amusement Enterprises Collection at the UCLA Film & Television Archive.

Tea and Sympathy

Warner Bros. | 1956 | 122 min | Not Rated
Directed by Vincente Minnelli

When MGM premiered the film TEA AND SYMPATHY in 1956, The New York Times’ mercurial film reviewer Bosley Crowther raved that the film was “Strong and sensitive”, and went on to praise the excellence of director Vincente Minnelli’s adaptation of the Broadway play upon which this film was based. Homosexuality was a taboo subject in 1956 Hollywood. So it was a challenge for screenwriter Robert Anderson to adapt his hit Broadway play about a sensitive prep schooler called “sister boy” by his peers and the lovely housemaster’s wife who realizes she must offer more than tea and sympathy to help the boy prove his manhood. The frankness may be muted, but the power remains in this stellar film. Under Minnelli’s distinguished direction, Deborah Kerr and John Kerr reprise their Broadway roles as the older woman and the younger man in poignant performances that reveal the compassion and the torment of being human. Their stage co-star Leif Erickson joins them in counterpoint as the emotionally clenched housemaster. Now beautifully remastered from a 4K scan of the original CinemaScope camera negative, one of Minnelli’s very best dramas arrives on Blu-ray in pristine form.
