After getting into a scuffle and finding themselves stranded in a remote southern town, brothers Mike and Josh discover that they’re in the midst of a much deeper problem. That night, Mike is attacked by someone — or something — and the following morning, everything about the sleepy town seems to have changed, as many of the locals appear sick and begin exhibiting increasingly unhinged and violent behavior. With the help of some equally concerned townsfolk, the brothers soon discover that forces beyond their control are slowly transforming the citizens into a horrifying form of the living dead…
A late-stage drive-in chiller which harkens back to the nuclear horror sci-fi favorites of decades past with an environmentally conscious update, stuntman-turned-director John ‘Bud’ Cardos’ (Kingdom of the Spiders) MUTANT stars character actor legend Wings Hauser (Vice Squad), Bo Hopkins (American Graffiti, The Wild Bunch), Lee Montgomery (Ben, Burnt Offerings), and many more. Produced by the notorious Film Ventures International (Grizzly, Beyond the Door, Great White), and offering plenty of monstrous makeup effects and ludicrous twists, Vinegar Syndrome finally brings this 1980s cult favorite to 4K UHD, featuring an exclusive new restoration of its 35mm original negative along with a plentiful assortment of new and archival extras.

When Ann, the wealthy yet mentally unstable wife of accomplished author Larry, claims to have found her husband brutally murdered in her stables, her psychiatrist, Dr. Marc, and Larry’s secretary, Mary, are skeptical — not least because there is no body to be found. What’s more, Dr. Marc finds a note from Larry saying he’s going away for a while to clear his head. A year later, Larry returns to the house, but Ann is adamant that this man is not her husband, despite the protests of Dr. Marc and Mary to the contrary. To add to her mounting turmoil, Ann starts to experience gruesome hallucinations and receives phone calls from someone claiming to be the real Larry, contacting her from beyond the grave. As those around her start being dispatched in various grisly ways, is Ann losing her grip on sanity, or could something even more diabolical be afoot?
Helmed by Enzo Milioni, director of giallo favorite The Sister of Ursula (1978), and starring Euro-horror regular Zora Kerova (Cannibal Ferox, The New York Ripper), ESCAPE FROM DEATH (aka Luna di sangue) was produced as part of a series of direct-to-video and television films released under the banner of “Lucio Fulci presents”, which also includes Fulci’s own Touch of Death and Umberto Lenzi’s Hell’s Gate. A twisty-turny giallo punctuated by moments of shocking and unexpected gore, Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to unveil ESCAPE FROM DEATH in its world UHD premiere, restored in 4K from its original 16mm negative and loaded with a selection of newly-produced bonus features.

What question has plagued mankind more than the mystery—and terror—of death? This forbidden pursuit has driven Dr. Frances B. Gröss to the brink of madness, but in his obsession, he has amassed a uniquely comprehensive collection of films that depict life in its final, grueling moments. From the savagery of cold-blooded murder to the perverse realities of war, tragic accidents, and the everyday lives of those who collect, dissect, and bury the dead, this descent into morbidity lays bare a truth that all of us will one day face.
One of the most banned, censored, controversial, and notorious films ever made, FACES OF DEATH (1979) changed cinema forever. A surprise home video blockbuster that spawned three sequels, the film was immediately met with praise and condemnation, along with legions of fans and hordes of protestors. Skillfully combining grueling imagery depicting the stark reality of mortality, blended with cleverly staged, ultra-gory re-enactments of murders, suicides, executions, and more too horrible to imagine, Vinegar Syndrome Archive is excited to at last bring FACES OF DEATH to 4K UHD newly restored from its long-lost camera original, and fully uncut for the very first time ever on disc; still as shocking now as it was nearly 50 years ago…

MGM | 1991 | 112 min | 1.85:1 | English DTS-HD MA 2.0
Directed by Mike Figgis
Starring: Kevin Anderson, Pamela Gidley, Bill Pullman, Kim Novak
Taking its name from the Lumière Brothers invention of the same name, Cinématographe is a new sub-label from Vinegar Syndrome that seeks to fill gaps in the canon of American cinema. Offering a mix of auteur driven studio films produced during the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and 70s all the way through the indie boom of the 1980s and 90s, Cinématographe will explore the wide breadth of American moviemaking, spanning numerous genres and scales of production. Curated and produced by Vinegar Syndrome’s Justin LaLiberty, each limited edition release will be housed in a specially designed, cloth-bound, media book with embossed foil titles and custom molded disc trays accompanied by a slipcase featuring newly commissioned art and an individually numbered J-card.
This special limited edition J-card MediaBook slipcase (designed by Adam Maida) is limited to 3,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
Nick Kaminsky (Kevin Anderson, Sleeping with the Enemy), a young architecture professor, leaves his current home in upstate New York to visit his terminally ill biological mother Lillian (Kim Novak, Vertigo) in small town Illinois. Nick’s college friend Paul (Bill Pullman, Lost Highway) is in the process of preparing to demolish an aging department store building in town that was the site of a violent crime years prior, which Nick intends to study the architecture of before he leaves town. After meeting Paul’s wife Jane (Pamela Gidley, Twin Peaks), who he is immediately attracted to, Nick starts to unravel dark secrets about his past and his family.
A labyrinthine, erotically charged neo-noir from Academy Award nominated writer and director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas), Liebestraum is a long overlooked entry in American crime cinema of the 1990s. Featuring stunning cinematography from Juan Ruiz Anchía (At Close Range), a tension building score from Figgis himself and bold production design from frequent Figgis collaborator Waldemar Kalinowski (Leaving Las Vegas, Internal Affairs). Cinématographe is proud to present Mike Figgis’s early 90s psychological thriller, in its uncensored director’s cut, in a new 2K restoration from its original negatives for its world blu-ray debut.

Welcome Vinegar Syndrome Labs (VSL) to the VS Sub-Label family! As with each of our sub-labels we are hoping to expand and defy expectations with the diversity of films we restore and release. As the name implies, VSL will serve as a kind of testing area for releasing genres and eras of film that one might not immediately expect to come from VS. The ultimate objective of VSL will be to see if these types of films will find an audience, and if so, pursue and release more of them…and even if not, still serve as a means of restoring more of the weird, rare, and unusual movies you might not expect from Vinegar Syndrome.
This special limited edition 2-Disc Blu-ray set comes with a spot gloss hard slipcase + slipcover combo (designed by Robert Sammelin), includes a 40-page perfect bound book, and is limited to 4,000 units. It is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
The world of French cinema is vast and multi-layered, as likely to veer into genre film as it is to pursue more arty, even absurdist notions. In terms of embracing dark moods and themes, be it in the form of murderous urges, aberrant sexual leanings, self-destructive machinations, or outright neuroses, the Gallic lens is perfectly adept. Here we present four varied approaches to the thriller à la française.
LES COUSINES (THE COUSINS)
Lucile, paralyzed and mute from a childhood trauma, lives with her sister Josine and their cousin Elisa. While the mother of Lucile and Josine frets over increasing costs and the complications of Lucile reaching legal age, Josine and Elisa live reckless lives of sexual abandon while mentally and physically torturing Lucile, their powerless victim. Playing their cruel games, getting high, and seducing men aren’t enough for these two; they’re in search of darker sadistic kicks. Also released as From Ear to Ear, this shocker of modernity and liberated morals was directed by veteran cinematographer Louis Soulanes (La Pointe Courte) and features Solange Pradel (World on a Wire), Alain Doutey (The Big Red One), and Katia Tchenko (The Bishop’s Bedroom).
QUI? (WHO?)
An arguing couple gets into a car on the Brittany coast where, driving erratically, it suddenly launches off a cliff and crashes into the waters below. The man Claude disappears into the sea, while the woman Marina manages to escape, and soon comes under questioning by the police as well as Claude’s brother Serge. Serge soon falls in love with Marina, despite her hazy, suspicious recollection of the accident. Returning to Paris, the two begin to retrace the crash and realize how inscrutable Claude was, amid coping with Marina’s fractured memory and heightened nerves. Claude’s body never turns up, and it becomes trickier to find out what, and moreover who is to blame for the accident. A giallo-esque thriller from Léonard Keigel (A Woman One Day) awash in a gorgeous score from jazz legend Claude Bolling (Flic Story), it stars Romy Schneider (The Swimming Pool), Maurice Ronet (Bloodline), and Gabriele Tinti (Mystère).
LE SECRET (THE SECRET)
Author Thomas and his wife Julia enjoy a quiet life isolated in the French countryside until one day when David, on the run and anxious, wanders onto their land. Sensing a man in need as well as a potential adventure, Thomas commits to help him, but Julia has her suspicions. As pressure mounts and a manhunt ensues, the trio hit the road, while David’s story of escape and persecution sounds increasingly neurotic, even unlikely. What is the secret behind David’s incarceration and escape, the burden he carries but refuses to share? How far will the couple go to help a man who may be mentally unstable evade capture? This taut conspiracy thriller was directed by Robert Enrico (The Old Gun) and stars Jean-Louis Trintignant (The Great Silence), Marlène Jobert (Rider on the Rain) and Philippe Noiret (Cinema Paradiso).
NUIT D’OR (GOLDEN NIGHT)
Michel Fournier is back, seemingly from the dead, and vows to exact revenge on all who wronged him, particularly his family. Menacingly issuing each of them a voodoo doll, his threats and intentions get increasingly obtuse as the world around him proves nightmarish and warped. From encountering a death cult to conducting a kidnapping, to trashing an underground casino, Fournier’s anxious, infernal rage is at the center of this quixotic and noir-infused exercise. Pairing lush yet unnerving visuals with a score by Chabrol regular Pierre Jansen (The Butcher), the film features the singular Klaus Kinski (Paganini) as Fournier, along with Marie Dubois (Jules and Jim), Maurice Ronet (The Champagne Murders), and Anny Duperey (Two or Three Things I Know About Her), under direction by the multi-talented writer/director/journalist Serge Moati (writer of The Nude Vampire).

The Eurocrime film, or poliziottesco, went through many of the same phases as other trends in Italian cinema. By virtue of necessity, stretching its boundaries or tooling with the genre was inevitable. Perhaps equally inevitably, given the sheer number of films produced, quite a few fell through the cracks over time. Three rare, distinct features late in the genre’s cycle, each retaining the big names associated with it, are collected here.
IL GIORNO DEL COBRA (THE DAY OF THE COBRA)
Larry Stanziani is a bottom-of-the-barrel private eye in San Francisco, quietly scraping by to make ends meet. But in a former life, Stanziani (Franco Nero) was The Cobra, one of the most capable and deadly secret agents the world had ever seen. Called back into action in Italy after a narcotics agent is killed, Larry uncovers a syndicate that’ll attempt every dirty trick in the book to finish him off. But they don’t know that The Cobra always stays one step ahead of any double-cross ever invented. Directed by Italo-action legend Enzo G. Castellari (The Big Racket) as a showcase for Nero’s range, this cheeky Eurocrime/gumshoe hybrid also stars Sybil Danning (Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf), Mario Maranzana (Behind Convent Walls), Mickey Knox (Cemetery Man), and Romano Puppo (The Big Gundown).
LA BANDA DEL TRUCIDO (THE RASCAL’S GANG aka DIRTY GANG)
Naples is being crippled by crime, and now an important police leader has been assassinated. The grizzled Commissario Ghini (Luc Merenda) is tough enough to tackle the crime wave and is the only one to fill his shoes. Meanwhile, Monnezza (Tomas Milian) has his hands full, too: he’s running his cheeky trattoria while also teaching a new batch of hapless schemers at his low-rent school for thieves. Balancing Milian’s popular comedic chops as a loveable rogue and Merenda’s hard-as-nails, stunt-driven performance, director Stelvio Massi (Arabella: Black Angel) pulls out all the stops for this wildly entertaining ride. Also starring Elio Zamuto (Violent Naples), Katia Christine (Designated Victim), and Massimo Vanni (1990: The Bronx Warriors).
IL COMMISSARIO DI FERRO (THE IRON COMMISSIONER)
Commissario Mariani (Maurizio Merli) has been taking down crooks for years, and these days the weight of it shows. He’s divorced, his son thinks of him more as a friend than a father, his superiors are critical of him, and even the children of people he put away are coming after him. But he’s not the Iron Commissioner for nothing, and however seasoned, he’s not afraid to knock around a few hoods to get the job done. When a kidnapping occurs too close to home, Mariani doesn’t hesitate to spring into action. A remarkably efficient and realistic feature from technical journeyman Stelvio Massi (Five Women for the Killer), showing plenty of tricks up his sleeve, it also stars Janet Agren (Bakterion), Ettore Mani (A.A.A. Masseuse, Good-Looking, Offers Her Services), and Chris Avram (Obscene Desire).

In the Camargue region of the South of France, there remains an infamous, long-standing tradition of bullfighting. Local youths participate in the elegant yet dangerous challenge, practicing a modernized version of the sport that seeks not to kill the animals but rather to showcase agility and dominance. Among them is Nejma, an intrepid twenty-two-year-old with dreams of one day winning the annual competition. The only woman working on the cattle ranch, she trains tirelessly to prove herself equal among the men, both in and outside of the arena. The ranchers share a deep respect for the bulls, though when a loose bull threatens the community of riders and young men begin turning up dead, a hunt to find and kill the creature begins. Nejma fears for the bull, beginning a dark, mysterious transformation of her own. The sophomore feature of French filmmaker Emma Benestan, Animale is “a brutal disorienting horror fable burning with feminine anger,” (AWFJ.org), and a thrilling entry into the body-horror subgenre.

After more than two decades of exile in Hollywood, master filmmaker Fritz Lang triumphantly returned to his native Germany to direct this lavish two-part adventure tale from a story he co-authored almost forty years earlier. Called to India by the Maharajah of Eschnapur, architect Harald Berger (Paul Hubschmid) falls in love with beautiful temple dancer Seetha (Debra Paget), who is promised to the Maharajah. Their betrayal ignites the ruler’s wrath, and the lovers are forced to flee into the desert for a series of spectacular adventures. Featuring breathtaking location photography and nail-biting suspense, this epic is highlighted by Paget’s erotic temple dance, a battle to the death with a man-eating tiger, sandstorms, a cave of lepers, and a bloody palace rebellion. Together these films provide a cinematic link between classic silent serials and the modern action thrills of Indiana Jones and The Mummy. Previously available in America as “Journey to the Lost City,” a radically condensed 90-minute version, these exotic masterpieces are presented in this 2-disc boxed set newly restored to their original splendor.

Existing outside the boundaries of reality, House of Dreams is a lost chapter of mid-century, avant garde horror from director Robert Berry. The story follows Lee (Berry), a frustrated author who is plagued by recurring nightmares centered around a haunted house. Shot on gritty 16mm film stock in Indiana and never legitimately distributed, House of Dreams is a sincere, abstract, and melancholy haunting that would feel right at home on a triple feature with Meshes of the Afternoon and Carnival of Souls.

Mabel Cheung’s debut unfolds as the quintessential American story: that of the “illegal” immigrant, doing anything they must to survive in the so-called land of the free. After a raid on a Canal Street garment factory leaves Cheung (Ching Yong-Cho) targeted by immigration agents, the mainland refugee resorts to a sham marriage with a reluctant acquaintance named Cindy to access a green card. An NYU graduation project miraculously funded by Shaw Brothers Studio, Mabel Cheung’s The Illegal Immigrant was entirely shot on location in New York’s Chinatown, in authentic gambling parlours and video stores, amidst real-life gangsters and undocumented immigrants cast as non-professional actors. From this results a remarkable encapsulation of a time and place that no longer exists; a comic tragedy that establishes, with unusual freedom, the foundations of what would become Mabel Cheung “immigration trilogy” a short few years later with the successes of An Autumn’s Tale and Eight Taels of Gold.

Mark’s wife has tragically passed away in a fatal automobile accident. After the funeral, his close friends agree to convene at his lakeside abode for the weekend to support their friend in his time of grief. Soon after arriving, the tumultuous relationships between the various couples begin to bubble to the surface and a mysterious tool-wielding, black-gloved killer begins butchering the visitors one by one. It’s The Big Chill meets Curtains in Savage Vows: one the quintessential ‘90s regional SOV slasher epics notable for its grisly, homespun practical gore FX, its pulsing synth score, and a smattering of scenes shot in the insanely stocked horror section of Full Moon Video, a regional mom and pop video store in Pennsylvania that was owned by the director at the time of production.
The sole directorial effort by frequent Polonia Brothers actor and collaborator Bob Dennis, Savage Vows is both a disquieting, neon analog nightmare and a singular (and strangely cozy) Polonia-adjacent hangout slasher. A backyard sprinkler of blood splattering madness featuring acting performance by pioneering SOV legend Mark Polonia (Splatter Farm, Feeders), director Bob Dennis (Bad Magic, Terror House), and prolific fetish model and performer Kelly Ashton, Saturn’s Core is proud to present Savage Vows on special edition Blu-Ray accompanied by new contextual featurettes and commentaries with the cast and crew.

Decades after becoming an internet sensation, Ghyslain Raza breaks his silence
In April 2003, a video of lightsaber-wielding teenager Ghyslain Raza arrived online and became a worldwide sensation, eventually earning more than a billion views. Widely perceived as a misguided Star Wars fanatic hungry for attention, Raza only had a casual interest in the franchise, and the original tape was a camera test for a school project he never intended to show anyone. Shared without his consent, the video went on to saturate mainstream culture, but rather than benefit from this attention, Raza was ridiculed, hounded by the press, and bullied by his classmates, ultimately forcing him to withdraw from school and all aspects of public life.
In Star Wars Kid: The Rise of the Digital Shadows, Raza breaks his silence, revealing how this internet phenomenon became a harrowing personal ordeal – and the path he took to restore his self-esteem and find a sense of purpose as an adult. Fleshing out Raza and his experience, director Mathieu Fournier brings new depth to a story that went global without going deep and even brings Raza into contact with the blogger who turned him into a meme. It’s a potent look at high-tech harassment and disturbing new threats emerging online today.

Starring: James Donnelly, Suzanne Mercer, Maggie Wright, Jane Cardew, Michael Armstrong
From nudies to roughies to ultra weird regional curiosities, the sexploitation world welcomed any filmmaker working in any genre, so long as the limits of nudity and sex on screen were pushed as far as they could go – but never all the way. DISTRIBPIX, one of the legendary names in the genre (and whose extensive library will be the backbone of this line), will offer single, double, and even triple feature Blu-rays highlighting works from every corner and crevice of softcore smut, from the dawn of nudie cuties to the all-but-hard 70s, with plentiful lost and never on disc films along the way.
This special limited edition 2-Disc Blu-ray comes with a spot gloss hard slipcase + slipcover combo (designed by Richard Hilliard), includes a 40-page perfect bound book, and is limited to 3,000 units. It is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
Few names are more synonymous with the British sexploitation business than Stanley Long. For close to two decades, Long produced nearly two dozen blockbuster nudies, often working with notorious filmmaker Derek Ford, while pushing the limits of the British Board of Film Censors. Presented here are a quartet of his most ribald and rebellious efforts, all newly restored in 4K by Distribpix, from their best surviving film elements.
In THE WIFE SWAPPERS, a stern-faced doctor hosts a series of case studies focused on the often unsettling world of swingers. Director Derek Ford and producer Long’s first international hit played British cinemas for months, and helped to usher in a more permissive era in the country’s film industry. Featuring James Donnelly (Scum, Crown Court).
A small-time rock band and their young female admirers-cum-lovers embark on a cross-Britain tour in GROUPIE GIRL, and the girls discover the darker side of the musicians they adore. An earnest and sobering examination of groupie culture, director Derek Ford works from a strong screenplay co-authored by regular Long collaborator, Suzanne Mercer. What happens when a man isn’t satisfied with only his wife for a lover?
A series of light-hearted vignettes expose SEX AND THE OTHER WOMAN. Long takes on directing duties in this more farcical, upbeat comedy which piles on both high jinks and non-stop nudity. Featuring Maggie Wright (Twins of Evil) and Jane Cardew (The Flesh and Blood Show).
ESKIMO NELL tells the tale of a first time director trying to make a “serious” art film, who finds himself in over his head as each of his financial backers demands a very different, and far sexier, final product. Tom Blaine cannot figure out how to take control of his life. Still reeling from the trauma brought on by the failure of his first marriage, which ended after his wife left him for another woman, Tom drifts deeper and deeper into self-hatred and resentment towards others. As he becomes increasingly paranoid that those around him are conspiring to manipulate and deprive him of happiness, Tom’s erotic daydreams — or are they memories? — along with his increasingly strained relationships with his new lover, old friends, and strangers threaten to drive him closer to the brink of madness and violence. One of director Cecil Howard’s (Dead Boyz Can’t Fly) most abstract and experimentally-structured films, SNAKE EYES is a neon-tinged study of emotional disintegration filtered through punk and new wave aesthetics. Featuring arresting dramatic performances from Jerry Butler (Roommates), Joanna Storm (Firestorm), Paul Thomas (Intimate Lessons), Sharon Mitchell (Joy), Laurie Smith (Matinee Idol), Cassandra Leigh (Raw Talent), and Howard’s exclusive starlet Rikki Harte (Spitfire), this tense tale of love and lust on the rocks comes to Blu-ray from Command Cinema, newly restored in 4K.

There Are No More Closets: The Films and Videos of Wakefield Poole, Volume 1
⍟ Muscle ⍟
[ MD-006 SLIP ]
1974-1984 | 382 min (combined) | 1.33:1 | English DTS-HD MA 2.0
Directed by Wakefield Poole
Starring: Casey Donovan, Val Martin, Burt Edouards, Curt Gerard, Peter Fisk, RIchard Locke, Sal Guange, Nick Ritter, Dutch Valentino, Rudy Valentino, Glenn Robinson, Bill O’Connell, Philip Borden, Alexander Stewart, Guillermo Ricardo
Muscle is a new film distribution company with a heavy repertory slant from historian, programmer, and filmmaker Elizabeth Purchell. Borne out of an understanding of the role that accessibility plays in shaping cultural histories, Muscle is dedicated to complicating and expanding the canon by shining a light on works that either never received their proper due or that have unjustly faded into obscurity, and championing new works by some of today’s most exciting underground filmmakers. Muscle loves scrappy, misfit films that don’t fit into any particular box.
This special limited edition slipcover is limited to 1,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
There Are No More Closets is a three-volume anthology collecting the complete works of pioneering gay film and videomaker Wakefield Poole. This first volume brings together Poole’s final three feature films and first two videos.
In the wake of the disastrous release of Bible! (1973), Poole relocated from New York to San Francisco and marked the occasion with Moving! (1974), a trio of vignettes starring Casey Donovan (Boys in the Sand) and Val Martin (Sextool). Three years later, he teamed up with local experimental filmmaker Edd Dundas to make Take One (1977), an ambitious “docufantasy” about the lives and lusts of a group of real gay men, including the iconic Richard Locke (Forbidden Letters).
Poole returned to New York at the turn of the decade and reunited with Donovan once again for his final feature film, Hot Shots (1981). He made the transition to shooting on videotape in 1984 with Split/Image (1984), another trio of vignettes themed around a magazine photoshoot, and The Hustlers (1984), a narrative feature about two roommates who earn their living on their backs that began its life as a semi-autobiographical vehicle for Donovan and Robert La Tourneaux (The Boys in the Band).
