Easily one of my favorite songs from a film’s soundtrack, “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls epitomizes the heart and soul of the film, “City of Angels,” and captivates as a genuinely original and mesmerizing song. The music video alone is memorable enough to bring back the emotions I felt the first time seeing it on MTV.
Fronted by lead singer John Rzeznick, the Goo Goo Dolls have been around since 1986. They released their biggest album (actually their sixth album in all) in 1995, titled “Dizzy Up The Girl,” carrying this week’s Song of the Week “Iris,” as well as “Slide,” “Broadway,” and my personal favorite “Black Balloon.” The band has since skyrocketed as one of the most popular bands of the last few decades, recently releasing the album “Gutterflower” with the single “Here Is Gone.”

The Goo Goo Dolls have an unmatched eclectic sound, adding richness and heart to the scenes with their song. Whether it be a love scene or simply a touching moment, you know there’s bound to be some emotions when a film contains the Goo Goo Dolls. Comparable to The Fray and their unique way of accompanying the highlights of a movie, the Goo Goo Dolls round out the best bands ever.
The band is no stranger to movies, getting their first few songs on the “Nightmare on Elm Street” sequel, “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare.” Later, they could be heard in the films “Son In Law,” “Tommy Boy,” “Twister,” “Batman & Robin,” “Down To You,” “Here On Earth,” and most recently, both “Transformers” films. Upon the third film’s soundtrack release, the band reprised their role on the album with yet another contribution to the film soundtrack. You can hear them on several television episodes of “Jericho,” “Smallville,” “Cold Case,” and two years of the “WWE Tribute to the Troops.”

Though many bands have attempted to cover “Iris,” including New Found Glory, another personal favorite band, there is no matching the passion and intensity that The Goo Goo Dolls bring to the song.
