Believe it or not, but after 49 years in the business and over 40 films credited as director (over 20 of those films being documentaries), German director Werner Herzog (known mainly for “Grizzly Man” and “Rescue Dawn”) has only been recognized by the Academy once (a nomination for Best Documentary for “Encounters at the End of the World” in 2008). Though I have not yet seen “Into The Abyss”, the film has gained critical acclaim and has even won an award at the BFI London Film Festival for Best Documentary. While I am sure many of the documentaries nominated this year deserve the honor, Werner Herzog is long over due.
