“Real Steel” was the one film in the Visual Effect category that took me by surprise (my prediction had gone to “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” because of the amazing sequences on the skyscraper and in the dust storm). I was able to nail all four remaining films, but for some reason, I did not see “Real Steel” as a contender.

Now that it is and now that I have seen it, I am still skeptical, though I should probably be leery. However, if we’re going for battling robots, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” might hold a corner on that market. Also, this is one of the only categories “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” finds itself in and I feel if the Academy wants to honor the final installment, the Oscar will more than likely go to that. Otherwise, “Hugo” could easily make a sweep through all of its categories including this one.

“Rise of the Planet of the Apes” is also a huge contender, coming from the same visual effects team that created “Avatar” which won in this category in 2009. Since a big portion of the cast of “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” is CGI and they are extremely believable at that, I believe this film could easily capture the Oscar.

So, though “Real Steel” snuck into this category, it doesn’t have a huge shot of winning.
