Marked by myself as the front-runner for the Best Visual Effects category, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” brings the masterpiece of motion capture to a whole new level. The same team that brought you Gollum from “Lord of the Rings” and the James Cameron world of “Avatar” bring to life the reboot of the late 60’s science fiction series “Planet of the Apes”.

I will be completely honest and say that I was really hoping for an Andy Serkis nod for Best Supporting Actor, and in the upcoming years I think the Academy will finally notice his hard work, but until then, we will settle with this film bringing home the Best Visual Effects award. With more than half of the film’s characters made up of computer-generated apes, there is no reason this film couldn’t win the award. Weta Digital is the company that brings you this exquisite CGI and produces such quality work that the gorillas, apes, and orangutans blend in with their human counterparts and the city settings almost seamlessly. Though cases could and will be made for “Hugo” and “Harry Potter” winning this category, for now I will keep my vote on the damn, dirty apes.
