LAWLESS / Yes, yes, yes! The first Lawless trailer hit the web today and I couldn’t be more excited. Director of The Proposition and The Road, John Hillcoat, returns to the big screen with his prohibition period piece about a group of brothers (Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy) delving in the bootleg business when their way of life is threatened by a deputy (Guy Pearce) out for their heads. There is so much that excites me about this film, it is ridiculous. The cast, alone, is enough to heighten my anticipation. Shia LeBeouf, Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska are all at the top of their game and this film will most certainly highlight that.

Add to that the re-teaming of John Hillcoat and Nick Cave, with Cave providing not only the score but also the adapted screenplay (adapted from the Matt Bondurant novel The Wettest County). I love period pieces, I love outlaw adventures, and I love well-written films, and Lawless appears to be all three. This also feels like a film that could easily get Oscar attention next year, but I will wait to make that judgment until after I see it. Lawless effectively contributes to what should be an exceptional summer of movies.
