Tuesday Releases: Underworld Awakening & The Vow

Underworld‘s fourth installment is released this week. On par with the rest of the series, Underworld: Awakening follows the same vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale) as she returns to the series. Reminiscent of the Resident Evil films, if you enjoyed the first three Underworld films, you will probably find enjoyment in this one. Don’t expect to see Scott Speedman however, and be ready for the new addition of a young girl vampire. Overall, the plot structure is nicely done but the film lacks anything new.

The Vow was also released this week. This film may look like a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, but it’s not. However, in a close enough drama, Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum play a deeply in love couple who suffers a tragedy when McAdams is involved in an accident and forgets who Tatum is (reminiscent of Sandler’s 50 First Dates but obviously taken more seriously). With these two actors, it is hard not to feel like this won’t be somewhat good, especially with the billing of “from The Notebook, Rachel McAdams and from Dear John, Channing Tatum”. This will remain the perfect date night movie until Zac Efron’s The Lucky One (which is a Nicholas Sparks adaptation), hits DVD and Blu-Ray.

Quiet week otherwise. There’s a film that was just released in theaters Friday that is being released this week titled Mother’s Day. That short-lived limited release is just in time for next week, but do not expect anything but a crappy hostage thriller. On the other side of the availability spectrum, Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie gets a DVD release despite it having been available for months now on several different On Demand access points.

This time of the year is tough for DVD releases since the films that come out in theaters around the beginning of the year are usually “throw away” titles and thus, get released on DVD around this time. Do not expect any extremely good releases until around Christmas when we start getting the summer blockbusters released.
