JUNE 26TH, 2012

A few big releases this week, including a favorite comedy of mine this year, 21 Jump Street. Starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as an odd couple police partners who are sent back to high school in an undercover unit, the comedy in this film is superior to anything released this year. More of a “bro” comedy than anything, 21 Jump Street has a few surprises and tons of laughs.

Huge Academy Award winning film The Artist gets a DVD release this week as well, winning Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor among others. This black-and-white, silent drama proved that you can still make throwback films that can revolutionize a genre far past their heydays.

Clash of the Titans sequel, Wrath Of The Titans is released this week, starring returning lead Sam Worthington, along with a returning Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes as Zeus and Hades. Wrath explores even more Greek lore, and delivers on par with the original, with enough thrills and action to keep you entertained throughout.

The last major release, as far as I’m concerned, is the Academy Award nominated foreign film, Bullhead, which took my pick at this year’s Oscar challenge as the one to beat (although beat by the forever triumphant A Separation). About a cow slaughtering tough guy with a kind heart, the visuals and the performances in this film are awe-inspiring.

Some weaker releases this week include Eddie Murphy’s flop, A Thousand Words, in which Murphy only has a thousand words left before he dies, so he must choose his words wisely. Another one for the kids would be Mirror Mirror, the lesser known Snow White film this year, directed by Tarsem Singh and starring Lily Collins and Julia Roberts. Much more childish in nature, compared to Snow White and the Huntsman, there is really no comparison in these two films.

The Decoy Bride, starring the gorgeous Alice Eve, is this week’s British release, a comedy about stardom and escaping the spotlight.
