Tuesday Releases: American Reunion

The biggest release this week is the return to form of the American Pie series, American Reunion, with the entire original cast returning (forget those God-awful straight-to-DVD releases). The film brings back the original crew for their class reunion, with many of them married, having had kids, and still pining about the good old days. The laughs are definitely there, the emotions are fresh, and this ends up being a really great story, worth bringing back the memories of this franchise.

A few worthwhile small titles get released this week as well with Robert De Niro and Paul Dano starring in Being Flynn, about a young man (Dano) who “re-encounters” his father (De Niro) at the homeless shelter that he works at. This acclaimed drama is at the top of my list for films I still need to see this year. Also, Margaret starring Anna Paquin gets released after five years of waiting to be released, due to the director’s unwillingness to cut the film down from its lengthy 150 minute run-time. I have read that 2 versions of the film will be available on DVD. The film is about a young girl (Paquin) accidentally incites a devastating incident, leading to a pedestrian dying in her arms. What sounds like a very compelling film also tops my list of films to see.

The last bigger title to be released this week stars Christian Bale in a foreign film that many called the best foreign film of 2011, though the Academy did not agree. This Chinese titles has Bale playing an American mortician sent to China to bury a foreign priest. Though I know very little about the film, I thoroughly enjoy Christian Bale and will probably catch this film as well.
