Tuesday Releases: Lockout, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, & The Three Stooges

On this, the week of “The Dark Knight Rises” in theaters, the DVD releases are off the charts, with so many good titles to choose from, there will be a lot of catching up on small Indie films that I missed in theaters.

The biggest release this week probably goes to “The Three Stooges”, even though I have absolutely no desire to see this film. I get that multiple generations loved the originals and still hold a place in people’s hearts, but this remake did not appear to have the same heart and just felt off.

Accompanying that release is the science fiction thriller starring Guy Pearce, “Lockout”, involving Pearce being sent to space to retrieve the president’s daughter after she is held captive on a newly designed space prison holding the world’s most dangerous men. The film plays just as implausible as it sounds and is a horrible showing from the writer that brought you “The Fifth Element”, Luc Besson.

“Salmon Fishing In The Yemen” gets a release this week, starring one of my favorite actresses, Emily Blunt, and a growing favorite of mine, Ewan McGregor. This romantic comedy, as the title alludes to, is about introducing salmon fishing into the desert country of Yemen, despite how implausible that may sound. The driving plot is the developing love story between Blunt and McGregor and I will definitely be looking into that, especially with the director of “Dear John” and “Chocolat” (Lasse Hallstrom) behind its direction.

Willem Dafoe stars in “4:44 Last Day on Earth”, yet another end of the world tale, except this Indie film has a much deeper and darker side than say Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley’s take on the apocalypse in “Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World”. Ben Foster stars as leading man in his own romantic drama about a land surveyor making maps in a foreign country when he meets a beautiful woman who then travels with him in the Indie film “Here”. With Ben Foster being one of my all-time favorite actors and having missed this film in theaters, I will definitely be finding this film.

And the list goes on. Will Ferrell stars in the (almost) all Spanish-spoken film, “Case de mi Padre”. Ferrell’s ridiculous nature mixed with the overindulged, melodramatic satire of Mexico’s notorious telemundos, this promises to be a humorous venture. “Get The Gringo” returns to Mexico, placing Mel Gibson in jail where he must escape with a young boy with a rare blood type. In Gibson’s first feature since last year’s “The Beaver”, I’m interested to see if he’s still lacking in the acting department. And to finish out the Mexi-trifecta, the Spanish film “The Intruders” from director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and starring Clive Owen, the film focuses on a man and his daughter as they deal with an invisible being named Hollow Face.

With literally something for everyone this week, including “The Dark Knight Rises” coming out in theaters, this is a great week to be a movie lover like myself, now I just need to find the time to watch all of these films.
