AUGUST 14TH, 2012 |
This week is full of new releases, in both the regular DVD releases and the TV box sets.
“Hick”, starring Chloe Moretz as a runaway teen who ends up amongst an odd group of people including actor Eddie Redmayne and the gorgeous Blake Lively. “Hick” often comes off as young people playing dress-up and playing roles much older than they are, but it still has a certain Southern appeal.
“Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory” is an Academy Award nominated documentary and was my pick last year to win it, although it was beaten by a film I had not seen, titled “Undefeated”. Following the lives of the inmates (one on death row) known as the Memphis Three, who were accused of satan worship, particularly in the death of young boys in a highly publicized court case, infamous for showing corruption in the police force and the redneck nature of those involved.
“The Raid: Redemption” is probably the biggest release this week, even though it didn’t fair too well in the box office. This foreign language martial arts film depicts a S.W.A.T. team entering a building invested from the ground up with unsavory people. And when the ringleader on the top floor marks the S.W.A.T. with bulls-eyes to the occupants in the building, all out war ensues. “The Raid: Redemption” marks one of the best martial arts films this year.
Topping off the list of the theatrical films getting a DVD release this week are three films on my “to-see” list, including “Kill List”, “Take Me Home”, and “The Snowtown Murders”.
On the television series side, “Community” fans rejoice as the third season is released on DVD (though I am not yet amongst them). Also, having become a huge fan of the ABC series “Happy Endings”, I am excited to see Season Two hit DVD. And the biggest and best release of the week is the highly anticipated Sixth Season of Showtime’s “Dexter”, which I must see immediately, having not seen any of this particular season.
Honorable mentions include: “Breathless”, starring Gina Gershon and Val Kilmer, in a bloody, dark comedy and “Assassin’s Bullet”, which just came off a week of being in theaters, starring Christian Slater.
