OCTOBER 2ND, 2012

Tim Burton-produced “Dark Shadows” steals the top spot in popular DVD/Blu-Ray releases this week, which comes at a perfect time as the Burton-directed animated film “Frankenweenie” gets released in theaters. “Dark Shadows” is based on an old soap opera about a man being turned into a vampire by a jealous witch and resurfacing in the 1970’s to bring his family name back to its original glory, despite the same witch vying for his affection. Johnny Depp leads the cast with a great performance, while Eva Green becomes the sexiest witch I’ve ever see.

“People Like Us”, starring Chris Pine, Olivia Wilde, and Elizabeth Banks, is a story about a broke man (Pine) who finds out he has a sister (Banks) and is instructed to give her a large sum of money from their deceased father. While he gets to know her, he decides whether he should give her the money or reveal their connection. This looks like a nice little drama and with such the stellar class, it shouldn’t be missed.

The release I’ve most been looking forward to this week is “Sound of my Voice”, a film about a cult starring Brit Marling a their leader. As two documentarians join the cult in order to get an inside look, we can only imagine was follows. The film is said to be quite intense and with Marling becoming an actress not to miss, I will definitely be getting my hands on this.

Several other major releases include “Red Lights”, starring Robert De Niro as a powerful psychic while Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy attempt to prove that he’s not who he appears to be. Elizabeth Olsen also stars as Cillian’s love interest in “Red Lights”, but also appears in the new release “Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding” alongside Catherine Keener and Jane Fonda about a family trip to a hippie farm. And non-Elizabeth Olsen release, “The Lady” was a huge contender around Oscar Season but was never actually nominated for anything.

Television releases are somewhat minimal this week: “How I Met Your Mother – Season 7” is the most pertinent to me. If you don’t have the entire series yet like I do, “House – The Complete Series” is release this week as well. The Rachel Bilson drama “Harts of Dixie – Season One” is out, which pairs her and the creator of “The O.C.” once again. And the Zooey Deschanel driven “The New Girl – Season One” is finally available for consumption.
