With a big name like Robert Zemeckis behind it and the thrill of his return to the live action, “Flight” has a great shot of getting some Oscar recognition this year, especially with Denzel Washington’s high caliber performance and an excellent script from John Gatins. Zemeckis has been nominated for an Academy Award an astounding 32 times, with 1/3 of those wins. Here’s his list of Academy Awards nominated films:

  • Romancing the Stone (1984)
  • Back to the Future (1985)
  • Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
  • Back to the Future Part II (1989)
  • Death Becomes Her (1992)
  • Forrest Gump (1994)
  • Contact (1997)
  • Cast Away (2000)
  • The Polar Express (2004)
Zemeckis won an Academy Award for Best Director for “Forrest Gump”, another strong, character driven film. Denzel Washington is no stranger to the Oscars either, nominated a total of five times, winning twice:
  • 1987 – Nominated for Best Supporting Actor; “Cry Freedom”
  • 1989 – Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor; “Glory”
  • 1992 – Nominated for Best Actor; “Malcolm X”
  • 1999 – Nominated for Best Actor; “The Hurricane”
  • 2001 – Academy Award for Best Actor; “Training Day”
With such a strong showing in “Flight”, I would be entirely surprised not to see him as one of the five nominations, having locked him in the Best Actor category. Several other awards could come from this film as well, with a great Original Screenplay and some breathtaking Visual Effects, either of those are strong possibilities.
