THE HOST // Here’s where I lie with this upcoming March release, “The Host”, I am stuck in between wanting to see it and not, with both sides holding equal factors. The film’s story comes from Stephanie Meyer, the author of the “Twilight” saga, with her credit in the trailer often getting a laugh in the theaters I attend. Granted the “Twilight” series was a huge hit, I wanted absolutely nothing to do with it, books or films. Now, with “The Host”, I am unsure whether this is yet another melodramatic science fiction fantasy, or whether she actually created something worth seeing.
On the other hand, I enjoy director Andrew Niccol, whose credits include “The Truman Show” (1998) and “In Time” (2011). Although the latter got bad press, I found myself enjoying it for the most part. Also, the major selling point for me is this outstanding trailer, which effectively presents its star, Saoirse Ronan, who looks absolutely stunning in this role. Also, the music for the trailer is phenomenal, provided by this year’s favorite new band, Imagine Dragons, with their third single “Radioactive”.
Since I see most films that come out, I will probably commit myself to seeing it. Whether I will enjoy it is a different question, which will rely mostly on what the story focuses on. If it hones in on the science fiction and survival aspects that are apparent in the trailer, I will most likely enjoy myself. But if it becomes a revamp of “Twilight”, with melodramatic relationships, jealousy, and poor dialogue, then I will regret ever being conned by the marketing. Wherever I end up, it doesn’t change the fact that this is a great trailer.
