HER // It’s about time Spike Jonze goes back to directing sincere, quirky films that put him on the map (“Adaptation.”, “Being John Malkovich”). “Her” is an emotional romance film, except instead of a man and a woman falling madly in love, it’s a man falling in love with a computer operating system. Sounds hot right? And somewhat laughable? But if there’s one thing the trailer achieves, it’s establishing that this will be an emotionally taut drama with real connections and a realism that windows our actual future with computers. Helped by a strong supporting cast in Amy Adams and Rooney Mara, along with the seductive voice of Scarlett Johansson, “Her” is brimming with talent.

The real talent comes in the almost retired Joaquin Phoenix, who is acting on all cylinders in this role, embodying all the characteristics we’ve come to love about him and completely leaving his mockumentary, rap days behind. In the right move, Warner Brothers will release “Her” in limited showings starting December 18th after its premiere at the 50th New York Film Festival in October, in order for it to meet the specifications for the year’s Academy Awards. Although this year is heating up to be a very competitive year in the Actor in a Leading Role category, never count out three-time Academy Award nominee Pheonix, nor two-time Best Director nominee Spike Jonze.

Release Date: 18 December 2013
