As far as “Labor Day” goes, I’ve heard literally nothing about the film. With a late start date and no reviews surfacing yet, the only thing we have to go on is those involved their history with the Oscars. Director Jason Reitman has been to Oscars twice with four total nominations between “Juno” and “Up In The Air”. Sadly, with how heavy competition is already, I find it tough to think Reitman will be nominated for any of his writing or directorial work this time around. Kate Winslet, the star of the show, was nominated five times until finally winning on her sixth nomination, a Best Actress In A Leading Role for her performance in 2009’s “The Reader”. Never count her out, but with so many nominations and a win already, it’s tough to see her rising out of the late released film with much traction. Josh Brolin was nominated that same year for his supporting role in “Milk”, so he’s no stranger to the awards show. So until I see the film or even start hearing about it, I’ve got to say, at a glance this is packed with potential, but in a highly competitive way, I don’t see “Labor Day” pulling off any upsets.
