Before seeing “42” in April, I would have strongly guessed this film would garner tons of Oscar attention. But after seeing the film, I realized it was just a well produced sports film and not much more. With strong historical relevance and a period piece setting, the film had all the prerequisites to grab some nominations, but with weak delivery and now some much better examples of films with historical ties to race, “42” has fallen completely on the back burner. Having this film nominated for anything at this point will be a complete surprise. And this isn’t to say the film isn’t good, because it is quite enjoyable. The fact of the matter is, it doesn’t deliver on an Oscar level and therefore is unlikely to please voters.
