Get out your pen and paper because “Gravity” will be kicking ass and taking names at this year’s Oscars, becoming one of the biggest box office successes and most critically acclaimed films of the year. Not only with this be shoveling in the critic’s awards, as one of the most successful original screenplays on the market this year, but it will also land in the nominations come the Oscars. Sandra Bullock is a lock for a nomination in the Best Leading Actress category, facing the possible likes of Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine”). As a strong (and solo) actress, this is Bullock’s to lose, as she comes off an Oscar win a few years ago for her role “The Blind Side”. Ask any critic and they’ll tell you this is the Oscar she’ll actually deserve. Although George Clooney is fantastic as the only other actor in the film, I do not predict we’ll see him nominated.

Alfonso Cuarón is no stranger to the Academy, with both “Y tu mamá también” and “Children Of Men” nominated for Best Screenplay. He also holsters a nomination for Best Editing (“Children Of Men”). But no wins. He will definitely land in the Best Director and faces a full deck situation where “Gravity” will be nominated for at least Best Picture, Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, and probably Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, landing in almost every category it can get its hands on. Facing off with “12 Years A Slave”, this will be one of the first years that I don’t mind where the needle drops, with both of these films portraying exactly what a best film of the year is.

Expect to see “Gravity” as one of the most nominated films of the year with a solid lock in Best Visual Effects. If I were a betting man, I would lay money on it right now. Depending on how the film lands after the critics awards and the slander parties begin, “Gravity” could be sitting nicely to bring home the gold. Not often do we get original concepts that are fan and critic favorites, in space, with a female lead. “Alien” is a long step away. If “Gravity” does win, Warner Brothers will see the Best Picture Oscar two years in a row (“Argo”).
