BadGrandpa-makeupandhairstylingWhen the Oscar nominations were announced just a few weeks ago, I think that absolutely everyone involved was surprised to see “Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa” as one of the final three to be nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Not because the film and its makeup does not deserve it, but because Jackass has never been a brand name associated with the Oscars. On purely merit based achievements, however, “Bad Grandpa” is a makeup marvel, turning wild man Johnny Knoxville into a completely convincing 86 year old man, which ends up ringing true to all the marks that are pranked throughout the course of the film. You completely forget you’re watching a young man in an old man disguise. Having watches some of the behind the scenes, the process of turning Knoxville into Irving was a long process repeated everyday, which is true for most prosthetic applications in film. Could Knoxville and his team win? Absolutely, but my money will probably rest on the more popular “Dallas Buyers Club”. Despite using less obvious makeup, I have a feeling the Academy will have a hard time with the following phrase: “The Academy Award winning Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa”.
