Christopher Townsend, Guy Williams, Erik Nash and Dan Sudick
“Iron Man 3” was one of my favorite films of 2013 and a lot of that had to do with the amazing visual effects. Whether you’re watching missiles being shot from helicopters and destroying Tony Stark’s Malibu mansion, knocking it off the hillside into the ocean, or whether it’s the amazing visuals of Iron Man jumping from an exploding plane and saving the crew that is falling from the sky, known as the barrel of monkeys trick, or whether it’s the grand finale of the Iron Man arsenal of suits that attack the Extremis army, all of these elements add up to one of the most visually pleasing films of the year. “Iron Man” has become a staple in the Marvel Universe and now the Marvel Universe has become a staple in the Best Visual Effects category and that couldn’t make me happier. That being said, “Gravity” continues to own the category no matter what is nominated and we just have to be thankful “Iron Man 3” got this far. But expect the Best Picture frontrunner to grab this award without question. Dan Sudick, a visual effects producer on “Iron Man 3” has now been nominated for both “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2” and even “The Avengers”, but has yet to win.
