Title: “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”
Artist: Lorde
Written by: Roland Orzabal, Ian Stanley, and Chris Hughes
Source: “Dracula Untold” Trailer (2014) + “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” Soundtrack (2013)

For me, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” will always coincide with the original artist, Tears For Fears, and before shows like “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report,” there was HBO’s “Dennis Miller Live,” which utilized the song as its theme. Last year, however, the now broken-through singer-songwriter Lorde covered the Tears For Fears song for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” soundtrack, and although it did not catch on for me then, it has now as part of Universal’s “Dracula Untold” marketing. The film does not look enjoyable whatsoever, but with the inclusion of this music in the entire first trailer, there is a tinge of respect for the studio and company that came up with the idea to use the song. Cut perfectly to the trailer, the ridiculous medieval story of a man trying to protect his people by becoming Dracula is entirely forgettable, but find the right tune that sets the right tone, and you can make anything memorable. Lorde is such a talented young woman, and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next, with “Team” being my favorite of her songs so far. But as she gets ready to curate the soundtrack for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One,” nothing solidifies her current position in pop music quite like that.
