Paul Franklin, Andrew Lockley, Ian Hunter and Scott Fisher

Dust clouds and robots, the visual effects team behind “Interstellar” literally created other worlds. And not just one, several. From a giant tidal wave planet to a completely ice covered planet with a sky that mirrors the ground, not only did these worlds captivate on the big screen, they also became some of the highlights of the film, setting this apart from any other science fiction film and putting these characters into some truly death-defying, suspenseful positions. Space ships docking or crashing or both at the same time. Letting humans experience what it might be like to actually travel into a wormhole, or a black hole, or another space-time dimension. To make a completely grandiose statement, this is truly the work of gods playing out on the big screen. And although this might all be from the mind of Christopher Nolan, the visual effects team helps him implement his ideas every step of the way.

Speaking of his team, Paul Franklin was nominated for his visual effects work on “The Dark Knight” (2008) and he and Andrew Lockley won for their work on “Inception” (2010). This is Ian Hunter and Scott Fisher first nomination.

What’s its competition? Despite some very strong contenders, I would have to put “Interstellar” in the front position for Best Visual Effects. As described previously, the work in the film makes it the stellar science fiction that it is. Without that work, it would a) feel like every other space odyssey ever made and b) would not be as engrossing as it is. Nolan puts his work to a higher standard and for that, the achievements of those that can keep up with that standard end up being miles above the rest. If anything is going to give “Interstellar” a run for its money it would likely be motion capture darling “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes,” which brings an entire colony of apes to life, feeling just as real as you and I. But even still, I feel like this is “Interstellar’s” to lose.
