Action movies are nothing without their editors, building suspense and tension, creating moments where perhaps they didn’t formerly exist. Timing is everything. And the timing in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is impeccable. Whether it’s editing the beats of a chase through the sand, where our heroes suddenly reveal to be getting on the Millenium Falcon. Or whether it’s the perfect timing of a suspenseful moment when the heroes suspect Stormtroopers of invading their ship when it is revealed to be Han Solo and Chewbacca. These are moments that are captured in the editing suite, and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is full of them.

What’s its competition? Pound for pound, “Mad Max: Fury Road” is probably the main competitor for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and this editing award, with the pacing of the entire film’s chase sequence is part of its marvel. And with 10 nominations over only 5 for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” there is much more love for “Mad Max: Fury Road,” meaning it could take a bit to beat it. But with that comes the fact that “The Revenant” has even more support with 12 nominations, with Best Film Editing being one of them. To me, it would be down to those three, with “Spotlight” and “The Big Short” being the outsiders, with the action/adventure films being more impressive in edits.
