If there’s a theme popping up from all these categories that “The Revenant” is nominated for, it is attention to detail. Nothing is skimped on when it comes to this production and that goes just as much for the costumes, which Jacqueline West put painstaking detail into, using sketches and descriptions from folklore as to what the men wore. Dressing 500 background people on top of the main characters, that is no short order. So much thought went into the creation of these costumes, whether it be the figuring of the characters geographical location and what materials would have been available to them as well as deep symbolism, as with Leo’s bear skin that is worn through most of the film, which signifies a death so that he could live. The brilliance of this detail is reiterated by everyone involved, including the director, and helps make this film feel truly authentic.

What’s its competition? Unfortunately, the pundits place this one at the bottom of the barrel for some reason. So everything becomes competition for it. As will most categories, “Mad Max: Fury Road” is a main threat, but period pieces like “Carol” and “The Danish Girl” could also prove different to overcome. And “Cinderella” is a wild card, because the costumes are absolutely stunning, and sometimes fantasy can rule all. If anything, this category is completely up in the air. But most are not betting on “The Revenant.”
