“The Revenant”

OscarsⓇ Nominated Role: As John Fitzgerald, Tom Hardy plays an early 19th-century trapper who goes against orders and abandons a gravely injured comrade in the wilderness.

Believe it or not, this is Tom Hardy’s first time being nominated for an Academy Award. And if he continue the trajectory he is on with his career, this will definitely not be his last. Playing the antagonist of “The Revenant,” Hardy makes us hate his character like only he can. As it is always said, a hero is only ever as good as his villain and Hardy’s performance pushes Leonardo DiCaprio’s to the huge levels that it does. Hardy plays the slimy, conniving Fitzgerald perfectly, bringing his gruff, earth-weathered, overly vocal persona to a head when he leaves Leo’s character for dead.

Who’s his competition? Working against Hardy is the fact that he does not have a Screen Actors Guild nomination, with the stats proving that it’s very hard to win the Oscar without that prerequisite in place. But Sylvester Stallone (“Creed”) lacks that as well, and he is the pundits front-runner for winning, so that stat might not mean much this year. Mark Rylance (“Bridge Of Spies”) was the front-runner coming out of the critics awards and he does have the SAG prerequisite, so if the stat does hang on, he could definitely be the winner. Hardy may be the newcomer in the category, but he is definitely no stranger to films with Oscar attention, like “Inception,” “Warrior,” and even this year’s “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Previous nominations? This is the first Academy Award nomination for Tom Hardy.
