WHEN MARNIE WAS THERE
Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Yoshiaki Nishimura
FILM SYNOPSIS: After lonely young Anna is sent to live in Hokkaido with her relatives, she spends her time drawing and exploring her rural home. Anna is befriended by a mysterious blonde girl named Marnie who lives in an isolated mansion, and as their bond grows, Anna becomes obsessed with uncovering the secret of Marnie’s life.
Even though producer Yoshiaki Nishimura has only been nominated once before, Studio Ghibli has now been nominated five times for an Academy Award, with “Spirited Away” winning the Oscar in 2003. “When Marnie Was There” is the nominee this year and it marks the last film to be produced by the studio before it hiatus following the retirement of director Hayao Miyazaki. The film is the patented Studio Ghibli style of anime, with a story focusing on adult matters like death, depression, and adoption, all while delivering fully formed characters and believable situations. If the emotional drama of the lead character, Anna, doesn’t bring you to tears, the revelation at the end of the film will likely send you to the brink. There is such human qualities to every character in this film, that you almost forget you’re watching an animated feature. Like “Anomalisa,” there are no punches withheld.
What’s its competition? There simply looks to be no beating Pixar’s “Inside Out,” which has been a juggernaut in taking awards this year and looks to add the Oscar to that as well. Even so, “When Marnie Was There” also faces competition from Academy favorite Charlie Kaufman with “Anomalisa” and another Academy favorite in Nick Park’s team behind “Wallace and Gromit” with the feature “Shaun The Sheep Movie.” So no matter how it shakes out, Studio Ghibli faces an uphill battle regardless.
Previous nominations? This is the first Academy Award nomination for Hiromasa Yonebayashi. This is the second Academy Award nomination for Yoshiaki Nishimura. He was previously nominated for:
