Music by J. Ralph; Lyric by Anohni

From the award winning directors of “The Cove” comes another documentary that will leave you absolutely furious with the state of our society and what is deemed acceptable when it comes to depleting natural resources and basically contributing to our own extinctions. Hence the title “Racing Extinction.” Director Louie Psihoyos once again takes to hidden cameras and using his connections to make a difference as he travels the world pointing out all the problems that our society is causing, including the melting ice caps, the overabundance of methane in the air we breathe, and the depleting of the oceans animals with acidic conditions and illegal over-fishing. We are taken underwater to see sharks whose fins have been cut off for shark fin soup, only to be returned to the ocean where they hover at the bottom with no fins. We are taken through cityscapes and he and his friends, including a female race car driver and an artist dealing with projections attempt to get the word out to the public. We are taken behind the scenes to restaurants and butcher shops where endangered animals are prepared and served. In the midst of this is the song, written by J. Ralph, who was previously nominated for the writing a song featured in “Chasing Ice,” which was performed by Scarlett Johansson. “Manta Ray” definitely fits the themes of “Racing Extinction” and drives home the messages being sent.

What’s its competition? With so many popular artists in the Best Original Song category, it feels like there’s not much room for any unknowns. Meaning Lady Gaga has the upper-hand by being on fire lately, representing at the Golden Globes, the Super Bowl, and the Grammys all within the last few months. Now she’ll be at the Oscars performing and with all that attention, it’s hard to believe anything else can win. On top of that, “Racing Extinction” isn’t even the only documentary in the Best Original Song category, with Lady Gaga’s film also being a documentary titled “The Hunting Ground,” which was also passed up by the Best Documentary category for a nomination. But by the song being nominated, that means more eyes on the documentary “Racing Extinction” and that alone is power for the cause.

Previous nominations? This is the first Academy Award nomination for Anohni. This is the second Academy Award nomination for J. Ralph. He was previously nominated for:

  • CHASING ICE (2012)
