THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS || A period drama based on the 2012 book of the same title, sees real life couple Michael Fassbender (Academy Award nominee) and Alicia Vikander (Academy Award winner) raising a child that washes up on shore, following the heartbreak of not being able to bear children of their own. But when a grieving mother (Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz) comes into their life fitting the description of the baby’s mother, they enter the heartbreaking turmoil that becomes the centerpiece of the film. Despite the high caliber cast in place here, this drama is said to be a bit “foggy” (Ebert.com). It’s directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines) which is enough for me to see it. |

MORGAN || Directed by Ridley Scott’s son, Luke Scott, is a horror thriller about a bioengineered child who may need to be destroyed or at least that’s what Kate Mara’s character is there to decide. But before she can, it appears that Morgan (Anya Taylor-Joy) gets loose and wrecks havoc. Also starring Toby Jones, Paul Giamatti, and Rose Leslie (“you know nothing, Jon Snow”), the ensemble cast is definitely in place, but as Roger Moore states, we’re apparently only entitled to one or two good horror films for the summer (referring to Lights Out and Don’t Breathe). |
