THE DISAPPOINTMENTS ROOM || Relativity finally releasing films again, with the all-but-unheard-of The Disappointments Room, starring Kate Beckinsale. What’s sad is that Mike Flanagan’s Before I Wake was originally slated to be released by Relativity this weekend, but was bumped, with the company’s founder and Chairman and CEO, Ryan Kavanaugh stating on Twitter, “Sep 9th bad date. Pls. Don’t tell people Sep 9th good release date, its not. Announcing good date soon.” I wonder how the folks behind The Disappointments Room feel about their film being moved to that date following that statement? |

SULLY || The true story of the “miracle on the Hudson,” in which an airplane pilot, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, was forced to land his aircraft on the Hudson River when both engines failed. The trailer makes it seem that there are questionable circumstances involved, with the question of whether both engines were actually inoperable, whether Sully really needed to land in the water or if he could have made it to an airport, and whether their were some sobriety issues involving Sully. Regardless of these questions, the man saved everyone one board and that should mean something. This film is strongly reminiscent of the film Flight (2012), which saw Denzel Washington nominated for a similar role as well as the screenplay. Whenever you put Clint Eastwood behind the camera, you’re bound to have Oscar buzz. Just look at how American Sniper (2014) pushed through when most critics and pundits had written it off. Now, here is Sully, which is already getting buzz and the fact cannot be denied that this could easily be involved come Oscar time. Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney, and Autumn Reeser also star. |

WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS || When The Bough Breaks will not be nominated for any awards this year, however, unless it has the misfortune of being nominated for a Razzie. When Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall find a surrogate to have their baby, the young woman, Jaz Sinclair, becomes the definition of “fatal attraction,” using the child she’s carrying as a means to get what she wants from Morris. Obviously this won’t be winning any awards for originality, as there seems to be a “fatal attraction” film every year, with some of the most recent ones being Obsessed (2009), starring Idris Elba and Ali Larter, The Perfect Guy (2015), starring Michael Ealy and (ahem…) Morris Chestnut, and The Boy Next Door (2015), starring Jennifer Lopez. What this film does bring to the table are some sexy stars and sometimes that’s all it takes to get butts in the seats. |

THE WILD LIFE || Not as bad as most non-Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks fare, this even comes in a little better than say Rio or even Madagascar as far as I’m concerned. Featuring anthropomorphic animals in a Robin Crusoe animated tale that also includes pirates, The Wild Life lands somewhere in the middle of the spectrum as far as quality of animated films go, with the animation up to snuff and even the voices coming across, but the writing and lack of jokes holds the film back from completely going over. |
