FILM SYNOPSIS: On January 15, 2009, the engines of US Airways flight 1549 are disabled by bird strikes shortly after takeoff, forcing pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger to land the plane in the Hudson River. Suspecting pilot error, the NTSB investigates the unconventional landing, compelling Sully to prove that his actions were justified.
Sound editing refers to the creation of all the sound elements, besides music, included in the movie. Believe it or not, but the sound of a commercial airplane landing in the Hudson River does not exist. The sound of a flock of birds flying into airplane engines does not exist. And compiling the beeps and buzzes of an airplane have to be recorded and compiled by someone. Not to mention, there are explosions when Sully dreams. All of this aligns to grab “Sully” the Oscars nomination that it deserved when Tom Hanks was passed up for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
What’s its competition? Everything is competition for “Sully,” especially “Arrival,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” and “La La Land” which all have Best Picture nominations. Also, “Hacksaw Ridge,” the war film in all this, might have a slight edge on a technical level and is currenty the odds-on favorite, according to Goldderby.com.
