“Ben Cash”
As Ben, Viggo Mortensen portrays a father who has raised his six children in isolation in the Pacific Northwest, but must integrate them into society after his wife’s death.

Who’s his competition? Viggo’s nomination was the one none of the pundits could have predicted. When Viggo popped up in the Golden Globe nominees and then the SAG nominees, it was sealed that he would probably be going to the Academy Awards for his performance. Now that we’re here, Casey Affleck has won most of the critics’ votes as well as the Golden Globe for Best Leading Actor, while Denzel Washington somewhat surprised and took the Screen Actors Guild Award. Now, Viggo lands on the bottom of a stacked category, with both the aforementioned men vying for the win. But Viggo got here by everyone enjoying his performance and that should never be counted out, so if you’re looking for any “No Guts, No Glory” moments, this would be one.

Previous nominations? This is the second Academy Award nomination for Viggo Mortensen. He was previously nominated for:

Nominee, Actor in a Leading Role
