FILM SYNOPSIS: Jim Preston and Aurora Lane, two passengers aboard a luxurious starship bound for an interplanetary colony, are unexpectedly awoken from suspended animation 90 years early. As the only humans awake, the pair relies on each other for company, but while their relationship deepens, they discover that the ship and their fellow passengers are in danger.
Who’s his competition? Upon viewing “Passengers,” I had forgotten to remind myself which categories the film was nominated. I knew it was up for Best Production Design but could not for the life of me remember what other category it was a nominee. But when Chris Pratt’s character steps out onto the ship in his spacesuit and looks out at the stars and the score swells up, I suddenly remembered that Thomas Newman, the composer, was the other nominee for the film. And he earns it. For a film that was hardly talked about this year, he pulled off a nomination. Whether its the romantic moments or the race against time or even the lonely solitude, Newman carries a theme for all levels of emotion and does so in way that almost steals the show at times. Fourteen nomination now for composer Thomas Newman, and still “Passengers” will likely not win him a little gold man.
Previous nominations? This is the fourteenth Academy Award nomination for Thomas Newman. He was previously nominated for:
