FILM SYNOPSIS: Ove, a cranky, older Swede who has been contemplating suicide since his wife died, is constantly quarreling with his neighbors about the rules of their housing complex. Ove is initially hostile when a new family moves in next door, but the insistence of the mother on including him in their routine gives Ove a refreshed purpose in life.

What’s its competition? I suppose it should come as no surprise that this makeup and hairstyling team was also nominated last year for their work on the fellow Swedish film “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared” for doing essentially the same work, turning a much younger actor into a much older man. And surprisingly enough, people have been getting nominations for that a lot lately, thinking back to a few years ago when “Bad Grandpa” was also nominated. It appears the Academy is taken aback by the ability to age someone through practical makeup. Besides normal period hair and makeup, the only other real feat here is turning 60-year-old actor Rolf Lassgård into a scragglier, balding version of himself. No real feat when you consider the amount of work that likely went into either “Star Trek Beyond” or “Suicide Squad,” which added prosthetics and makeup to a good portion of their cast. This also has Best Foreign Language Feature appeal, so there’s a small chance this could eek a win from one of the other two, but I personally wouldn’t bet on it.

Previous nominations? This is the second Academy Award nomination for Eva von Bahr. She was previously nominated for:

  • THE 100-YEAR-OLD MAN WHO CLIMBED OUT THE WINDOW AND DISAPPEARED (2015)
    Nominee, Makeup and Hairstyling

This is the second Academy Award nomination for Love Larson. He was previously nominated for:
