THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI || What feels like early Coen Brothers and not just because Frances McDormand (Fargo) stars as the lead, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is that dark comedy that the Brothers were so naturally good at portraying. Director Martin McDonagh, (In Bruges & Seven Psychopaths) who also dabbles in the absurd dramas, delves into the story of a mother taking it to the police in her small-town when they are unable to make an arrest following months after the murder of her daughter. The title comes from the tactics she uses to humiliate the police and bring about awareness of what is happening. McDormand looks in rare form, playing the tongue-lashing mother with absolutely no fear. Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell play the police and while they are not quite bumbling idiots, they are much less competent than McDormand. John Hawkes, Peter Dinklage, Lucas Hedges, and Abbie Cornish also star. If you’re looking for the earliest of Oscar season predictions, if this film is as good as its trailer makes it seem, it could easily be a contender, at the very least for McDormand.
