TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT || Michael Bay has been doing the Transformers series for ten years now. This being the fifth installment, Bay could have easily stepped away by now, but he’s chosen to keep going with the series. This time around, he’s introduced a new form of technology that shoots IMAX 3D firsthand, saving from having to send the footage to post-production.
Mark Wahlberg returns following his last turn in Transformers: Age Of Extinction, which introduced the Dinobots. Now Josh Duhamel and apparently John Turturro rejoin the cast as well, bringing together the worlds created in the series. Anthony Hopkins also joins the cast, having recently called Michael Bay a savant, a historian that knows the entire history of the Transformers (“it started as a legend, one of the greatest of all”), and what that could mean for the future of Earth.
This time around, we will even head back to the time of King Arthur and the Transformers that were involved with the Knights of the Round Table. The first time we see Optimus Prime (once again voiced by Peter Cullen) he is being held captive (“you destroyed your home, do you seek redemption”) and it looks like Prime’s sudden side change is explained (“my maker… I do!”). Another new addition to the cast is Isabela Moner, the young woman seen talking to Wahlberg and who is absolutely read to fight the Decepticons, this time lead by the reincarnation of Megatron known as Galvatron (“two worlds colliding”). One of the next things we see is Optimus Prime fighting Bumblebee, with Wahlberg’s Cade Yaeger screaming beside him, “Prime, stop! You can’t do this!” Spaceships ascend upon the Earth (“the imminent destruction of everything we know and love begins”) and Izzy promises she’s not leaving Bumblebee. Laura Haddock as Professor Vivian Wembley joins the crew as well, basically filling in the Megan Fox absence.
And even though he’s gone rogue, Cade and Izzy both stand by Prime. Josh Duhamel’s William Lennox exclamation of “the operation is over” won’t stop them as with Cade responding “we’re not giving up on Prime, okay!?” and Izzy responds “I wanna stay and I wanna fight them,” all while Cade wields a sword, Prime is attacked by a group of what look like Decepticons, and a war initiates. Hound (John Goodman) is seen in the fray, the Dinobots are seen, and Prime closes out the trailer by saying: “For my world to live… yours must die.”
The tagline for the film is “Rethink Your Heroes” which is likely in direct relation to Optimus Prime turning on everyone. The only people missing, it seems, are Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox. The official synopsis is: “In the absence of Optimus Prime, a battle for survival has commenced between the human race and the Transformers. Cade Yeager forms an alliance with Bumblebee, an English lord, and an Oxford professor to learn why the Transformers keep coming back to Earth.”
