STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI || This year’s Star Wars will continue the story started by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, apparently starting almost exactly where the last film left off, with Rey (Daisy Ridley) facing Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) on a deserted island. The trailer starts in the same way, with Rey’s hand hitting the dirt and her gasp (“Breathe… just breathe”). She’s asked what she sees, as rocks being to levitate around her hand. She responses that she sees “light” as we see a shot in a command center behind Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). She says “dark” and we see the smashed mask of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Rey is seen in the distance of the island, on a ledge using a lightsaber. Some space jets are seen leaving red smoke trails behind them in a desert and an unconscious Finn (John Boyega) is shown being transported somewhere. Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) is shown running to an X-Wing starfighter before it explodes in front of him followed by the Millenium Falcon shooting TIE Fighters out of the sky. Adam Driver’s unmasked Kylo Ren is shown with his modified lightsaber from the first film, followed by an epic battle in space. The narrator speaks: “I only know one truth… it’s time for the Jedi to end.”
Now the speculation will begin. What is Luke’s relationship to Rey? Why is it time for the Jedi to end? Will Finn wake up? In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the idea of bringing back Harrison Ford and Chewbacca, as well as Princess Leia and minimally Luke Skywalker, were huge deals. They brought back the ideas of Darth Vader through Kylo Ren, who [SPOILER] ended up being the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia. With how infused that sequel was to the original series begs the question how connected this next installment will be, which was actually modified by Carrie Fisher before she passed away.
