MARVEL’S THE DEFENDERS || Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) unite in the first team-up series from Netflix and Marvel, The Defenders. Like how the Cinematic Universe issued the solo films like Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk before teaming them up in The Avengers, Netflix did the same by introducing each character in their own 13 episodes (Daredevil has had 26 after two seasons aired). Elektra (Élodie Yung) and Stick (Scott Glenn), who appeared in the Daredevil series, will also reprise their roles, even though Elektra was killed in the second season. You can probably also assume supporting characters like Karen Page (Deborah Ann Wolf) and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) from Daredevil, Jeri Hogarth (Carrie-Anne Moss) from Jessica Jones and Iron Fist, and of course, Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), who has appeared in almost every iteration thus far, will all have cameos as well. Sigourney Weaver will play the central villain, Alexandra.
Many people are speculating about the identity of Weaver’s villainess, as there are no Alexandra’s of pertinence in the Marvel world. But one blogger at MoviePilot suggests there might be a gender swap happening, with the real basis of the character being Alexander Bont.
“In the comics, Alexander Bont was the first Kingpin of Hell’s Kitchen. A ruthless crime lord, he gained a formidable reputation after he killed the costumed superhero known as the Defender, and held Hell’s Kitchen under his influence for decades. In fact, Bont was the one who ordered the death of Daredevil’s father after Jake Murdock refused to throw a boxing match.
Bont was actually one of the first villains put behind bars by Daredevil, and — upon learning that Matt Murdock may well be Daredevil — he launched a campaign of revenge. This involved blackmailing the ex-criminal Gladiator into launching an attack on Daredevil, after which Bont took matters into his own hands. Drugged up on Mutant Growth Hormone, Bont savagely beat Daredevil; he was only defeated when his heart gave out under the drug’s strain.”
They even go on to suggest that the seeds have been planted for Gladiator to make his official appearance, as Melvin Potter (Matt Gerald) is the alter-ego of Gladiator, and in Daredevil, he worked for Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) and then later redesigned Matt Murdock’s Daredevil costume for him. Even his Gladiator logo and armor were teased in Season Two of Daredevil. Being able to make this a big deal for the fanboys while connecting it to the other Marvel series is, to me, the main goal here and if that’s the case then this theory definitely holds some weight.
The big question I have… will The Punisher (John Bernthal), who will soon have his own series, have any implications in regards to this team up?
The trailer is scored by a remix of Nirvana’s “Come As You Are,” which is a great choice, bringing out the grunge of the show.
