TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT || Anytime you have Anthony Hopkins in your film, having him narrate your trailer is one of the huge perks, because it feels like everything he says becomes that much more important. In this final Transformers: The Last Knight trailer, he proclaims “for a thousand years, we’ve kept it hidden… the secret history of Transformers here on Earth,” which is where this film delves, going all the way back to the time of King Arthur. “Now to save our future… we must unlock the past.”
The huge element setting this Transformers film apart from the others is that they are turning the fan favorite protagonist Optimus Prime against his friends, with him facing off against Bumblebee and Mark Wahlberg on more than one occasion. Wahlberg supplies a lot of the comedic relief, yelling at one of the Dinobots to start off the trailer and now riffing with new cast member, Jerrod Carmichael (Neighbors), who plays someone under the employ of Wahlberg’s Cade Yeager. Carmichael dealing with the absurdity of the Dinobots and even getting hit with a bean bag and thinking he’s dying are the keys to the comedy here. My favorite line from Wahlberg is directed at Bumblebee during a chase: “You better have some skills today, buddy.”
Although the Earth is always at stake in these films, I am curious what reasoning they have come up with as to why the Transformers keep returning here. Despite this playing like a final film (“Two worlds colliding… only one survives”) Paramount and Michael Bay have actually set up a Transformers Universe that will likely begin to play on after this, starting with the rumored solo Bumblebee film.
