Cause of Death: Apparent Suicide by Hanging
Iconic frontmen are few and far between, so when we lose one unexpectedly, it tends to hurt that much more. Even if you did not know of Chris Cornell, you have definitely come across his voice at least once in your life. “Black Hole Sun” is probably his band Soundgarden’s most memorable ’90s anthem, putting his grunge band up there with bands like Nirvana and Bush. In the 2000’s, his new project Audioslave would be heard across the airwaves playing “Like A Stone.” In 2006, Cornell could be heard belting out the Casino Royale theme that ushered in Daniel Craig into the role of James Bond. And in 2012, Soundgarden reunited and released a single attached to Marvel’s The Avengers, which became the anthem and end credits theme. Cornell fought with addiction, but had been said to have recovered, focusing on his music, his wife, and three children. So to find out that Wednesday night, after Soundgarden played in Detriot, Cornell was found dead from an apparent suicide in his hotel room is a complete shock. As with all musicians, however, his legacy will live on through his music.
