Television Guide 2017: Renewed and Canceled

Every year, television shows are on the chopping block. If they do not get high enough ratings, if viewership is down, or if the series have simply run their course, they are cut from the network’s line-up. Never before have there simply been this many television series at play. And with Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu putting out their own content, it appears that there is no slowing down. There are definitely shows like The Walking Dead and American Horror Story that re not going anywhere anytime soon as they are simply just the most watch television at the moment. With Game Of Thrones ending in the next two seasons, HBO will be scrambling to find the juggernaut that will fill the gap left by that series. You even start to wonder how many seasons ABC’s Modern Family and The Middle can go one for, yet they still get picked up. I will be keeping this post updated as often as possible with the new additions, cancellations, and renewals, and editing the post with the updates so you can see what was recently added.

[05/21/17]: NBC renewed Trial & Error for a 2nd Season.

Freeform picked up Black-ish spin-off, College-ish.

CBS canceled Training Day and Ransom after 1st Season each.

Netflix renewed Arrested Development for 5th Season.

[05/16/17]: ABC picked up a Grey’s Anatomy spin-off and two spin-offs of their popular reality shows, Dancing With the Stars Junior and The Bachelor Winter Games and renewed Quantico for a 3rd Season.

FOX picked up Seth MacFarlan’s new show, The Orville for a 1st Season, canceled Scream Queens after its 2nd Season, and renewed New Girl for a 7th and Final Season.

CBS has canceled Criminal Minds: Beyond Border after its 2nd Season, but renewed Code Black for a 2nd Season.

[05/13/17] : CBS renewed Elementary for a 6th Season and The Amazing Race for a 13th Season. They have canceled the Joel McHale comedy The Great Indoors after its 1st Season and 2 Broke Girls after its 6th Season.

NBC reversed their decision about cancelling Timeless, to which they have now renewed for a 2nd Season. They have also picked up Mindy Kaling’s new show (following the final season of The Mindy Project) Champions for a full season.

ABC picked up two series, Deception, about an illusionist teaming up with the FBI, and Splitting Up Together, a comedy about Jenna Fischer and Oliver Hudson getting divorced. They canceled Imaginary Mary after its 1st Season.

[05/12/17] : ABC canceled Dr. Ken, The Catch, Secrets & Lies and American Crime. They renewed reality series The Bachelor, Dancing With The Stars, and Shark Tank and they also renewed the scripted comedies Black-ish, starring Anthony Anderson, for a 4th Season, Speechless, starring Minnie Driver, for a 2nd Season, and Fresh Off The Boat, for a 4th Season. Also renewed were Designated Survivor, Once Upon A Time, despite the fact that Jennifer Morrison stated that she would be departing after the 6th Season, American Housewife, and Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. which will be returning for a 5th Season.
Their pilots picked up for series include four dramas, The Crossing, The Good Doctor, For The People, and The Gospel Of Kevin, and two comedies, The Mayor, and an untitled show starring Zach Braff.

NBC renewed Law and Order: SVU for 19th Season and picked two new series, one titled Reverie and the other titled Good Girls. Their Blacklist spin-off series, The Blacklist: Redemption, however, has been canceled after its 1st Season.

CBS picked up seven new series, four dramas including S.W.A.T., Seal Team, Instinct, and Wisdom of the Crowd, and three comedies, which are 9JKL, Me, Myself, & I, and By The Book.

FOX renewed The Exorcist for a 2nd Season and its comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, starring Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, and Terry Crews for a 5th Season.

USA picked up Damnation for a full 1st Season.

[05/11/17] : FOX has canceled freshmen shows APB (drama), Making History (comedy), and Son Of Zorn (comedy), to which the last had the highest ratings. This opens the way for the new comedies they picked up, Ghosted, starring Adam Scott and Craig Robinson, and LA To Vegas, starring Dylan McDermott, and produced by Steven Levitan (“Modern Family”) and Gary Sanchez Productions’ Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, as well as the Marvel/X-Men based series they picked up titled Gifted. They’ve also renewed their Batman prequel series Gotham for a 4th Season and The Last Man On Earth, starring Will Forte, also for a 4th Season.

NBC has renewed The Blacklist for a 5th Season, while they have canceled their series Timeless after one season. They’ve also renewed all their Chicago based series, Chicago Fire for a 6th Season, Chicago PD for a 5th Season, and Chicago Med for a 3rd Season. Tina Fey produced Great News is also getting a 2nd season.

The CW has picked up four new series to order, including Black Lightning, which will join their DC Comics universe, a Dynasty reboot, Life Sentence, and Valor. They’ve also renewed their series iZombie for a 4th Season and The Originals for a 5th Season.

ABC has renewed Modern Family for a 9th and 10th Season, having just renegotiated with the cast to keep them around, coming along with the already renewed The Middle, which gets a 9th Season. The Goldbergs has also been renewed for two more seasons, with it getting a 5th and 6th Season. Not making the cut however, was Tim Allen’s Last Man Standing, which will be ending on its 6th Season.
