THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US || Idris Elba and Kate Winslet play two strangers that get on a charter jet after their original flights are canceled due to a storm, but after a plane crash, they are stranded in mountain terrain wilderness with just each other. The film is based on a 2011 novel of the same title, written by Charles Martin. The film is directed by Hany Abu-Assad (Omar & The Idol). The trailer sets up the plot in broad strokes. Elba plays a surgeon, Dr. Ben Bass, who needs to get back for a surgery while Winslet plays, Alex Martin, a photojournalist that needs to get back for her wedding. After they crash (the cinematography of the crash is pretty terrible, unfortunately), Alex is left with a broken leg and Bass must bring her along as they face the cold, the elevation, the predators, and the lack of food. As with most stranded-in-wilderness films, this has all the same basic elements, but instead of the childhood adventure supplied by films like Alaska or the thrilling elements of films like The Edge, The Mountain Between Us will likely lean on the romance factor, despite there being very little of that acknowledged in the trailer and having already set up that Alex is to be married, I’m skeptical that I can look past that. Either way, with Elba and Winslet starring, that’s enough reason for me to see it.
