There’s a few Academy Award players in this week’s batch, including the Natalie Portman led “Jackie” and the music drama “Whiplash,” which won J.K. Simmons the Academy Award. Classics make up most of the list, with Brian De Palma’s “Scarface,” the coming-of-age drama “My Girl,” the fantasy classic “The Neverending Story,” and the Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly led “High Noon.” “High Noon” isn’t the only Western, with the more recent “The Homesman” starring Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank. Martin Scorsese’s “Gang Of New York” will eventually gain classic status as may Mike Flanagan’s “Absentia,” as his career progresses. Lastly, Bradley Cooper’s “Burnt” was mostly unseen that year but is still on my list of films I need to see.
