As always, there’s a nice grab bag of different kinds of films up for grabs on the streaming sites this week. There are biopics, with the Academy Award nominated drama, “Hidden Figures,” starring Taraji P. Hensen, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe as three black women that worked for NASA as well as “Diana,” in which Naomi Watts plays the late Princess Diana. There’s some animated fare, with “The Book Of Life,” a very eye-catching children’s film about the day of the dead celebration and the Disney classic “Pocahontas,” which depicts John Smith (voiced by Mel Gibson) coming to America and trying to mine it for gold when they came across the Native Americans. “Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead” stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, and Marisa Tomei while “Alex Of Venice” stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the starring role. Colin Firth and Julianne Moore star in Tom Ford’s Academy Award nominated film “A Single Man” while Charlie Hunnam and Robert Pattinson star in the lesser received “The Lost City Of Z” which released in America earlier this year. Netflix has released a new mockumentary series titled “American Vandal,” poking fun at the new true crime fad in television, depicting a supposedly wrongfully accused teenager of spray-painting penises on the faculty cars and getting expelled and fined because of it. And in the number one spot, Ethan Hawke shows up yet again, this time alongside six other men, including Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, as they deliver some Western justice in the remake of “The Magnificent Seven,” one of my favorite films of 2016.
