With the first of October passing this last week, there are tons and tons of new movies to choose from, way more than normal. But still, I picked the top ten of the pile. With Guillermo Del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” releasing before the end of the year and possibly being a big Oscar contender, it’s the perfect time to watch his Oscar winning fantasy film, “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Speaking of the Academy Awards, “My Life As A Zucchini” was the only foreign language feature film I missed last year so now’s the perfect chance to fix that. Unless you’re obsessed with Gemma Arterton like I am, you probably haven’t heard of “The Disappearance Of Alice Creed,” but if you enjoy her work, it’s definitely worth checking out. A lesser known film on my list of films to see is the thriller “Raw,” which sees a young vegetarian woman try meat for the first time and projected into the life of cannibalism. Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis try their hand at a version of “No Strings Attached” and “Friends With Benefits” in a comedy aptly titled “Sleeping With Other People.” With the new Ellen Page “Flatliners” in theaters now, you might want to revisit the original Joel Schumacher version starring Keifer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, and Kevin Bacon, as it’s now on Crackle (it would have saved me $3.99 on Amazon if it had come out a week sooner). Baz Luhrmann’s critically panned “Australia” is also available, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman in a western-like love story. If you’re looking for some Halloween season spooks, “Lights Out,” starring Teresa Palmer and the 6th season of the horror anthology television show “American Horror Story” which is titled “Roanoke” are both available. Of all the films available this week, “Colossal” is the one that I’ve heard about the most, starring Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis (second time on the list this week) in a dramedy where Hathaway unwittingly controls a giant monster terrorizing South Korea.
