Before Chadwick Boseman was the Black Panther, he played a different hero, the baseball legend Jackie Robinson in the biopic “42,” alongside Harrison Ford, which is now available to stream. Legendary director Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning film “The Departed,” starring Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Matt Damon, among many many more is also available. Despite not being very popular among Terminator fans, I personally enjoyed “Terminator: Salvation,” which stars Christian Bale and Sam Worthington in one of the lesser known additions to the franchise. M. Night Shymalan’s return to form started with “The Visit” and led to “Split,” about a man, played by James McAvoy, that has a couple dozen personalities, one of which might just be an actual monster. Before taking on the sequel to “Blade Runner,” Denis Villeneuve took on a subtle alien flick starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner titled “Arrival.” Philip Seymour Hoffman and John Turturro star in the crime drama “God’s Pocket.” Before she was one of the most famous actresses in the world, Jennifer Lawrence starred in the dark drama “Winter’s Bone,” which ended up garnering her the first of her Academy Award nominations. Christopher Nolan is now a prolific director and along that path he created the ensemble thriller “Inception,” which changed the world of complicated story-telling forever. One of my favorite movies of all-time, directed by John Hillcoat and starring Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Gary Oldman, Guy Pierce, and Jason Clarke, “Lawless” tells the story of three brothers in the bootlegging business during the prohibition. In another favorite of mine, “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” Brad Pitt plays the legendary outlaw Jesse James while Casey Affleck plays Robert Ford, in this ensemble cast western that chronicles the legend, directed by Andrew Dominick.
