With Awards season in full swing, naturally the Oscar movies begin popping up. “The Young Victoria,” starring Emily Blunt, won the Oscar for Best Costume Design in 2010 and was nominated for Best Art Direction and Best Achievement in Makeup. “Certain Women” unfortunately was not nominated for any Oscars but did end up winning some Critics Awards for supporting actresses Lily Gladstone and Michelle Williams as three women whose lives intersect in small-town America, alongside actress Kristen Stewart. In 1974, actor Al Pacino and writers Waldo Salt and Norman Wexler would gain Oscar nominations for their work in and on “Serpico,” the cop drama where Pacino plays real-life New York police officer Frank Serpico, who ends up going up against all the dirty cops in his unit. At the 52nd Academy Awards, “Kramer Vs. Kramer” was nominated for 9 Oscars and won 5 including the one for Best Picture. Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep also took home Oscars for their roles in that. “The Hurt Locker” would win 6 of the 9 Oscars it was nominated for at the 82nd Academy Awards, also including Best Picture. Kathryn Bigelow won Best Director for her work on that film over her ex-husband James Cameron, who was nominated for “Avatar.”

The rest of the list steps away from the Oscar theme. With all the superhero films afoot these days, back in 1994, they were not quite running as rampant and films like “Blankman” where Damon Wayans plays a nerd that goes out as superhero actually felt new and refreshing. Before Tom Hardy took on the role in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” George Miller was directing Mel Gibson in the original “Mad Max” from 1979. Colin Farrell once took on the role of the famous outlaws Jesse James before Brad Pitt did (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”) in the 2001 Western “American Outlaws” alongside Ali Larter and Scott Caan. One of the biggest films to hit theaters this year was the ensemble cast “Kong: Skull Island” where the giant ape took on Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Goodman. And in the second of two Kristen Stewart films this week, “Personal Shopper” was a little indie from last year directed by Olivier Assayas (“Clouds Of Sils Maria”) where Stewart plays a personal shopper that wants to contact her deceased twin brother.
